Toto Wolff, the Head of Mercedes, Considered Selling His Stock and Leaving Formula One

Toto Wolff’s pal, a former Mercedes engineer, has revealed that the Austrian billionaire had thought about leaving Formula 1 a few years ago.

In 2012, Toto Wolff departed Williams F1 and began working for Mercedes as the team’s executive director. Additionally, he bought a 30% share in the squad, which ultimately rose to 33%.

He has had great success with the team, taking home several Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships while transforming his organization into the sport’s most successful team in recent memory.

Toto Wolff owns a third of his team, which is not unexpected given that he started his career as a banker. This contrasts with the majority of team principals on the grid who are solely in managerial roles with no personal involvement in the company.

Former Mercedes AMG engineer and Wolff pal Hans Werner Aufrecht said that the 51-year-old was on the verge of selling his interests and leaving Formula One at the end of 2019. According to Aufrecht (via Nextgen Auto):

“He was furious, furious, furious. What should I do, he asked. What am I doing, exactly, and why? Toto, it’s your life, I told him. You must act on your deepest desires.”

Toto Wolff affirmed this and provided the following justification for his change of heart: “Mercedes and I declared, We want to continue like this. Because, in the end, this team represents far more to me than just an investment.”

Prior to the 2023 Formula 1 season, Toto Wolff is still cautiously optimistic about Mercedes’ chances. The team struggled in the 2022 season, managing just one victory and ending an eight-race winning streak in the Constructors’ Championship.

Toto Wolff is optimistic about the team’s possibilities, but he doesn’t anticipate them to start out by challenging Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari. Toto Wolff stated:

“We are certain that it will be challenging to catch up to renowned organizations like Red Bull and Ferrari when you start behind by half a second. Having said that, we are really committed to achieving this goal, but we must maintain reasonable expectations.”

Toto Wolff continued: “We would want to participate in the race at the very front if we perform as we anticipate. Although we don’t take it for granted, I believe that would be a good place to start. It’s possible that the gaps are the same as they were at the end of the previous season.”
