“Virat Kohli Does Not Do Two Things Due to Which He Faces a Lot of Difficulties Against Nathan Lyon”- Says Sanjay Bangar

Sanjay Bangar has identified a few flaws in Virat Kohli’s strategy that gave him trouble against Nathan Lyon.

India and Australia will face off in a four-game Test series. The first match begins on February 9 in Nagpur. While Lyon will probably pose the largest danger to the Australian pace bowlers. Kohli is anticipated to be one of the hosts’ hitting constants.

When questioned about his opinions on how Virat Kohli will prepare to oppose the Australian off-spinner during a conversation on the Star Sports program “Game Plan,” Bangar responded:

“Virat Kohli struggles a lot against Nathan Lyon because he doesn’t do two things. He shoots more frequently from the crease, does not trust in moving out much, and doesn’t play the sweep effectively.”

In order to counter Lyon’s menace, the former Indian head coach believes Kohli may need to run down the track more frequently.

“So how will he beat Nathan Lyon at scoring? He will thus need to significantly alter his strategy. Although he may have accomplished it in a shorter game, we have already observed that he has utilized his feet a little more this season. He’ll have to carry out that.”

In the 18 Matches they have contested against one another, Lyon has seven times dismissed Kohli. In six games on Indian soil, four of the rejections occurred, three in 2013 and one in 2017.

Bangar emphasized that Kohli should prevent Lyon from settling on a line and length by stating:

“He will have to take a slightly aggressive approach” – Sanjay Bangar

“To be able to protect the line better, he will need to shift slightly toward an off-stump guard. He also shouldn’t let Nathan Lyon bowl too several pitches. Only you may frighten him gently once he adopts a somewhat hostile stance.”

The head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) further emphasized that Mitchell Starc’s follow-through helps the experienced bowler gain wickets most of the time, noting:

“There may be very few exceptions to the principle that Nathan Lyon performs best on Days 2 and 3. But after Mitchell Starc bowls a significant number of spells, a rough is generated beyond the right-handed batsmen’s off-stump. He is a person with few variants, but he seeks to take advantage of that gap.”

Starc will not play in the opening Test in Nagpur. Lyon may not be afforded the luxury of noticeable rough beyond the right-handed batsmen’s off-stump until the right-arm pace bowlers work all around the wicket for extended durations. Since India is reluctant to deploy Jaydev Unadkat.
