NFL Pro Bowl Slammed After Ravens Backup QB Tyler Huntley’s Selection

The NFL‘s Pro Bowl’s validity was further eroded on Tuesday when Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley was picked to the AFC squad for Sunday’s game despite starting only five games throughout the regular season and playoffs.

Tyler Huntley takes over for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who is out with an elbow injury and is expected to compete in a PGA Tour pro-am event at Pebble Beach this weekend.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been appointed as Patrick Mahomes’ replacement as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback prepares for the Super Bowl the following week.

Lawrence’s placement on the AFC team, on the other hand, makes more sense considering his status as the starting quarterback for a team that advanced to the NFL playoffs’ Divisional Round.

Derek Carr, the departed quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders, has also been added to the AFC roster

Tyler Huntley and the Ravens were ousted in the Wildcard Round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Lamar Jackson is still out with a knee injury.

Tyler Huntley’s late fumble was returned for a touchdown, thereby sealing the Ravens’ doom.

After years of fan concerns about the competitiveness of the All-Star game, the Pro Bowl was revamped this season.

The 2023 Pro Bowl will be based on several skill contests and non-contact flag football to avoid injury-conscious NFL stars playing at half pace.

Despite the changes, the selection process is still chosen by a combination of fan, coach, and player votes. Tyler Huntley was named to the Pro Bowl despite his minimal playing time behind Jackson in 2022 due to injuries to numerous AFC quarterbacks.

‘Congratulations to Tyler Huntley for making the Pro Bowl following a season in which he started four games and thrown for 658 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions,‘ sarcastically tweeted Pro Football Talk managing editor Michael David Smith.

‘And congrats to the NFL for making the Pro Bowl even funnier.’

‘Did Tyler Huntley make the Pro Bowl?’ ex-NFL receiver Brandon Stokley wondered. ‘He had two passing touchdowns and three interceptions. He started four games and appeared in five others. What exactly are we doing? Being a Pro Bowler isn’t what it used to be. It’s time to call it quits on the Pro Bowl.’
