Southampton interested in a loan deal for a Manchester United player

According to The Athletic, Southampton is interested in Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams. They are looking to sign him ahead of the January transfer window. Even this summer he was linked with a loan move to the Saints but Ole Gunnar Solkjaer blocked that move.

He wanted to move to London in order to get more Playing time. The Englishman was assured more playing time this season. However, he is yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils in the Premier League. Thus he is considering a loan exit from the club in January.

So far he has been only given chances in League cup games against Luton and Brighton. Manchester United signed Alex Telles from Porto and this has made it difficult for him to get playing time. Though the recent injury to Luke Shaw could get him some minutes.

He is now in direct competition with Telles given that Shaw is now injured. Last season as well he broke into the first team after an injury to Luke Shaw. Though he could not play well consistently he did show flashes of his brilliance.

Southampton interest in Williams

Currently, in the Southampton squad, Ryan Bertrand is the no.1 choice for left-back. It looks like Ralph Hasenhuttl wants to bring in more competition and cover in his squad. This season the Saints have started very well they are on eighteen points from eight games.

They would want to continue this good form and for that, they will need good players. However, it is still questionable whether Southampton can give him the necessary playtime or not. He would want to play regularly and not sit on the bench.

Another thing for him to consider would the Euros 2021. The Englishman is unlikely to be a part of Gareth Southgate’s plan but sometimes a chance may arise. In the 2018 world cup, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was ruled out with an injury. Ruben Loftus Cheek was called in to replace him, the year prior to 2018, he had spent a season-long loan at Crystal Palace.

Thus it would be better for him if he gets more playing time. In case an opportunity arises then his name could be in contention because he was playing on the pitch. Also at the tender age of 20, he should play at the highest level possible for him. Brandon already has Premier League and Europa League experience thus he should strive for that.

Have Manchester United handled the situation well?

Last season no one expected Brandon Williams to break into United’s first team. Unlike Greenwood, he simply was thrown into action. While the latter was slowly introduced to the first team. Given that it was his first season in the senior team which was struggling, Williams did very well.

However, it looks like his previous performances have not been taken into consideration. The Red Devils went on to sign Alex Telles despite having him on the team. They also assured him game time but he is yet to be given any substantial playing time.

Such incidents clearly indicate a lack of administration at the club. The Red Devils are in desperate need of a football director. Williams is a talented young player when the club decided to sign Telles, they should have loaned out the Englishman.

It is still not clear whether they will let him go in January or not. Currently, he is wasting his growth years on the bench. He has already played in Premier League and Europa League and he needs to keep playing at this level in order to continue his development.
