Chelsea willing to allow the player to leave as a reward for his service as he was worried about lack of playing time under Frank Lampard

According to The Athletic, Chelsea is willing to allow Oliver Giroud to leave the Club in the January transfer window. The Premier League giants want to thank him for his services at the club. This summer the Blues signed Timo Werner and they already have Tammy Abraham. Thus Giroud’s game time was severely limited this season.

He is yet to start a game this season and he has hardly been used as a substitute in most of Chelsea’s games. The Frenchman wants more playing time and Chelsea will not stand his way to secure a transfer away from the club. The Premier League giants have appreciated his three years of service at the club.

This is not the first time the Blues have allowed long term players to leave. The likes of Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanović were allowed to leave the club in previous January transfer windows. Even Petr Cech was allowed to join Arsenal in 2015 for free to get more playing time.

Oliver Giroud has been appreciated by Frank Lampard as well. The Englishman has been impressed with his professionalism. Giroud even at the age of 34, is still an integral part of the French national team. Next year France will participate in Euros 2021 and Didier Deschamps wants him to get more playing time so that he is a match fit.

Oliver Giroud future at the club

Chelsea is yet to fully decide the former Arsenal’s striker future at the club. Any decision on his future will only be made around closer to the January transfer window. Despite the heavy spending, it is possible that Lampard might face injury crises. If the likes of Werner and Abraham are injured around January then they might not sell Giroud.

This is not the first time, he has found himself in such a situation. In 2018, Arsenal signed Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon. This meant that Giroud become a bench warmer. He wanted more playing time to participate in the 2018 World Cup. The Gunners also signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, thus the Frenchman signed for Chelsea.

In his first few months at Chelsea, he became a key player for Antonio Conte, replacing Alvaro Morata in the first team. He was very influential his the Blue’s push for the top four and a key player for the FA Cup win. Then in 2018, he played as the first-choice striker for France and they won the 2018 World Cup.

The former Montipiller striker also revealed that he was worried about his place in the national team. Giroud’s hardly had any game time this season but Didier Deschamps still gave him a place in the team.

Giroud’s time at Chelsea

Since his time at the club, he has won 1 FA Cup and 1 Europa League. He even scored in both the finals for the club. He also opened the scoring in the Europa League final against Arsenal and set up Eden Hazard’s final goals for the club.

Even last season he was behind Tammy Abraham but he later won his spot in the latter half of the season. The Frenchman was again significant in the club securing the top-four finish. Giroud’s agent has said that his client is willing to stay in Premier League itself, however, he is also open to a move abroad.

Chelsea’s former manager Antonio Conte is said to be keen on a reunion. He is currently managing Inter Milan in Itlay. While MLS has also been mooted as a potential destination. Though nothing concrete has come out so far. However, he would prefer a move where he can get more playing time.

It is also unclear how much fees, Chelsea will demand Giroud. However, given that they are willing to let him go in January it unlikely that they will charge big fees for him.
