UVA T20 Premier League in Sri Lanka faces cancellation. Why?

UVA T20 Premier League becomes the second tournament in Sri Lanka to face a cancellation.

Cricket is slowly and steadily returning into action. Several T10 and T20 leagues all around the world are resuming gradually with time. International matches will also make its comeback after four months of no cricketing action. The England VS West Indies Test Series, starting from July 8, will mark the comeback of international cricket. Meanwhile, cricketing action in Sri Lanka also resumed with the kickstart of UVA T20 Premier League. on Monday.

The tournament would consist of four teams who will compete with each other over a week. The first day itself hosted two matches. Reports were afloat that the likes of Farveez Maharoof, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thilan Thushara, Dasun Shanaka and Ajantha Mendis will take part in the tournament.

This was a big cause of excitement within the fans as they were keen to see experienced international cricketers take part in the matches.

However, the tournament faced sudden cancellation after just two matches. This came as a surprise for all the cricket fans as there was some thrilling action on the first day itself. Both sides scored more than 200 runs.

SLC called the league unauthorised.

The legal team of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) decided to unauthorise the tournament according to a fantasy platform. This became the main reason for the sudden cancellation of the tournament.

However, the board had earlier given their approval for the UVA Premier League after which it commenced on Monday. Also, the likes of Dilshan, Maharoof, Mendis or Shanaka did not feature in any of the two matches played.

Rather Maharoof called the news of him featuring in the league as ‘fake’. He posted this on his official Twitter account and said that has no interest to play in this tournament or speak regarding this matter.

The UVA Premier League becomes the second tournament in Sri Lanka to face cancellation in the last few days. Earlier, the PDC T10 League was set to kickstart from June 25.

Reportedly, Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis were ready to play in the tournament. However, the SLC said that the organisers had not taken the required permission to start the tournament. So, the Asian cricket fans have to continue waiting patiently for cricket to restart.
