Arsenal players with long and short term future under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal gave Mikel Arteta a three-and-a-half-year contract in December but which players will prove vital to his vision for the club.

Mikel Arteta’s hunger for management has been clear since day one. His passion has rubbed off on everyone surrounding the club. From supporters to the players. With this has come to an improvement not just in results but also how the squad goes about producing those results.

A major factor of this U-turn has been Arteta’s man management. The way he executed his tactics was to ensure he could get the best out of each player on the field.

He has fairly shown which players could prove essential for him over the next few campaigns at Arsenal. With this in mind, let’s assess each player of the first team and whether they could have a short, mid or long term future under Arteta.

Goalkeepers

Bernd Leno

A standout performer this campaign, Leno has solidified himself as the Arsenal’s No.1. for seasons to come. His goalkeeping has been integral to the side still have a sniff of European football. In the league, his displays have remained smooth but particularly leading up to this halt. He looked fearless between the sticks and was key in turning draws into victories. His distribution still needs to be refined – as shown in extra time vs Olympiacos – but he is still an incredibly solid option for Arsenal to have as a first-choice goalkeeper. Long-term.

Emi Martinez

Martinez coming to be a first-choice choice seems far from likely. In his Europa League outings this campaign he has shown he is a credible option. At 27-years-old, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he started looking for regular first-team action somewhere else in the future. Short/mid-term.

Matt Macey

All his appearances coming for the Under-23s this campaign. Macey being shown the exit when his contract expires this summer wouldn’t be a shock. There was a promise he could break into the team in the 2017/18 season but without first-team football, in a campaign [on loan at Plymouth] it’s hard to see a long-term future for him. Short-term.
