Former Indian cricketer lashes out at Virat Kohli following India’s narrow defeat in the first T20I

The defeat in the first encounter of the shortest format with the Aussies has invited a lot of mixed reactions from different personalities of the cricket world.

The first T20I at Brisbane has proved to be a very unappreciative beginning to the long and hectic tour against the Aussies for the men in blue. The match saw the spoil sport played by rain during the Australian innings who were batting first.

It invited the usage of DLS method that was seen favouring the Australian side as they were provided with an additional 15 runs. This proved very costly for the Indian team as they had to embrace Defeat by a narrow margin of 4 runs, albeit crossing the Aussies’ original score in the designated 17 overs. The Australians managed to amass a total of 158 runs in the rain affected match in 17 overs which was later modified as 173 runs according to the DLS.

In response to the target of 174, India could only amass 169 runs. However, blaming rain to be the only cause for the visitor’s loss would be absolute lunacy. The bowlers were seen to be highly ineffective against the inexperienced Australian side which also opened the gates to defeat.

While players such as Virender Sehwag and Ravichandran Ashwin have been quite optimistic with the results, the defeat has not gone down well with the former cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar. He was highly disappointed with the team’s results and held the team selection solely responsible for the defeat.

He questioned the inclusion of the left arm orthodox bowler, Krunal Pandya into the side ahead of the experienced bowler, Yuzvendra Chahal. The former was lashed mercilessly by almost all the Australian batsmen and his figures ended at 55 in four overs at an average of 13.75. He received the wrath of the attacking batsman, Glenn Maxwell who hammered him for three humongous sixes in three successive deliveries.

This particular performance was totally not accepted by Manjrekar who debated that had Chahal been in the side, India would then have to chase 20 runs lesser and that would have been a cakewalk for the visitors. The leg spinner has already featured in 27 T20Is and bagged 44 wickets which clearly speaks about his expertise in the format.

Manjrekar concluded saying that Krunal Pandya could be retained in the side only as a batsman, owing to his good records in first class cricket and definitely not as a substitute for the experienced leg spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal.

“India paid the price for dropping Chahal. Krunal Pandya bowled 4 overs for 55 runs & no wicket. India would have been chasing 20 runs less in all likelihood if Chahal was playing. Play Krunal as batsman if you want to, but not as replacement to Chahal.”

It is expected that the visitors will carefully analyze the areas where things went wrong that brought about their defeat, work upon them and come back strong in the second T20I.

Here’s what Manjrekar’s tweet read :
