Reports suggest that Chelsea were close to a blockbuster deal with United but Ed Woodward refused to finalise the move.
If reports from French media this week are to be believed, Chelsea came fairly close to being an early beneficiary of the Mourinho Third Season at Manchester United, as The Special Once pushed for the sale of Anthony Martial.
According to RMC (via GFFN), United CEO Ed Woodward Refused all the bids for the frenchman from Athletico Madrid and AC Milan and also ruled out potential swap deals with Tottenham (for Aldeweirld) and Chelsea (for Willian).
In an ultimate power move, Woodward has even offered a new 5-year deal to Martial, though the 22-year-old reportedly still wants out post haste, especially if, by some divine providence, Mourinho stays employed into 2019.
Mourinho is a well-known admirer of Brazil international Willian following his tenure at Stamford Bridge. However, it’s claimed that a deal was pursued without the go-ahead from United chief Woodward.
Chelsea refused offers from Barcelona in the summer for Willian and it seems they remained determined to fend off interest from Premier League rivals United.

Willian was a wanted man throughout the summer but it’s believed that the experienced winger remains firmly in Maurizio Sarri’s plans for the future with the Blues.
I think it would have been an amazing move for Chelsea had this deal gone through. On the other hand, It would have been an awful deal for Manchester United. Not considering the quality, but the age, this wouldn’t have made any sense for United. And Ed Woodward is absolutely right in rejecting the bids as Martial is definitely one for the future.
