Liverpool lost to Real Madrid in the finals of UEFA Champions League last season as Karius made two howlers that helped Zidane side win the tournament for the consecutive time.
In the summer transfer window, 2018, it was sure that Liverpool would sign a new goalkeeper to bolster their goalkeeping department. Last season, Simon Mignolet and Karius were Liverpool’s goalkeepers, but failed to impress everyone. While Mignolet wanted to leave Liverpool in search of greener pastures, Karius’ inconsistent performance and continuous bloopers forced Liverpool to sign a new shot-stopper.
While Jurgen Klopp was initially interested in signing Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak from Atletico Madrid, the deal did not go through as Liverpool made a shrewd decision as not to trigger the release clause of the 25-year-old warden who has established his name as one of the best goalkeepers in the La Liga.
Instead, Liverpool turned their interests on Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker who enjoyed a hugely successful campaign with AS Roma last season. Liverpool bought him from AS Roma and made him the most expensive goalkeeper till then.
This also meant that Karius would need to find new destinations as it was no doubt that the Brazilian would take over the No.1 spot from him. He eventually ended up joining Turkish side Beskitas, but he claims that Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp wanted him stay at Anfield.
“He told me he would like to have me in the squad because he wants to have the best quality players. I asked him for my wish and that is important for me to make this move and play for Besiktas. I talked with him a long time. He understands my situation. I think it was a good deal for everyone. He wished me well but he said he would have liked to keep me.” said Karius.
Karius’ howlers in the Uefa Champions League final help Real Madrid clinch the tournament. Had he not made any bloopers, the result would have been different. Karius said it was the past. The goalkeeper said, “This is life, this is football. If you give the circumstances – with the serious injury as well – that you don’t know in what way it affected me, you have to move on. It was an unlucky day, but it’s football.”

“I don’t think a lot of players reach a Champions League final. If you look at how many goalkeepers in the league reach a Champions League final, I don’t know. So, it was a great achievement. Unfortunately, on this day we were unlucky and it wasn’t the best performance. But there was a lot of things that came together, it’s in the past now and I look forward to the future.”
As Karius said, this deal was a good deal for everyone. It would ensure Liverpool that this goalkeeper would continue his progress. For the goalkeeper, he would now find regular playing time, which would have been impossible to earn if he had stayed at Liverpool.
