Negotiations between Tottenham and Real Madrid target have stalled

It has been reported that talks between Eriksen and Tottenham over a new contract have stalled.

According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen wants a deal comparable to his teammates Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris. No agreement has been reached between the 26-year-old and the club for the past 6 months. Following the saga of Toby Alderweireld’s contract negotiations, Spurs cannot afford to have a repeat with another key player.

The former Ajax player is a key man in Mauricio Pochettino’s side and his departure would have huge implications. Pochettino has developed Eriksen into one of the best playmakers on the continent. His status has seen him attract interest from many of Europe’s biggest clubs.

He has been a mainstay in that Tottenham midfield since his arrival in 2013, making 168 appearances and scoring 41 goals in the process. Him leaving will be the last thing that Tottenham want after a brand new White Hart Lane ready to become a fortress and a 3rd consecutive Champions League campaign to look forward to. So, at this point in time, he is almost priceless for them.

He has been linked with a move to La Liga in recent months, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both reportedly interested in making a move for him. Let’s see if they can hang onto him beyond this season.

Author’s Take:

I think he should get what he wants. He has been the chief creator in that side for nearly 5 years. If he wants a contract worth the same as Kane and Lloris, he should be considered. Also, with a new stadium ready and the squad one year older, they should compete for the league and for that, they shouldn’t let off star players just as yet.
