Unai Emery urges Arsenal star to work harder to make the first team

The Arsenal star hasn’t been at his very best in the opening two games for the Gunners, and manager Unai Emery has urged him to show his best if he wants to make the cut.

Arsenal have lost their opening two games for the first time since the birth of the Premier League and while there is a transition time needed after Arsene Wenger’s long tenure, Gunners’ fans hope that a clash against West Ham could get them back on track. However, for manager Unai Emery, it is a chance to show some steel and maybe cut a few players who haven’t been up to the mark.

The former Sevilla manager has clearly shown that he won’t take poor performances, dropping contract rebel Aaron Ramsey ahead of the Chelsea clash and even bringing off Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka after halftime in the London derby. This move has been criticized and complimented by fans and critics alike, with many claiming that something like that would have never been done under Wenger’s tenure.

However, dropping one of Arsenal’s best stars especially after a season where the Welshman went on to produce 11 goals and producing a further 12 including 10 in just the Premier League in 32 appearances last term. But during his pre-match press conference, Emery went on to reveal that he had indeed spoken to Ramsey and said “I spoke with him last week. I said, ‘I want you focused only on training and only on the match, you show us the capacity to help the team.

The contract is another thing for his agent and the club, but we want – and I need – his focus only on training, on the match and his performance each day. I want the player to be focused only on Saturday. So that our players give our supporters quality and energy.”

The Welshman has already refused one contract offer from Arsenal and fans feel that it could be another Alexis Sanchez situation. The Chilean held the Gunners for ransom last season, refusing to sign an extension before eventually moving on to Manchester United. Mesut Ozil also did the same thing, but the German international re-signed with the club and was given a tremendous increase in salary.

Author’s take:

Aaron Ramsey is simply a player that Arsenal cannot afford to lose. The Welshman is not only a fan favorite but also one of the most multifaceted assets the Gunners have at their disposal and maybe under Unai Emery he can add another level to his game. The former Sevilla boss is known to bring out the best in players and has clearly said that he wants Aaron Ramsey to stay at Arsenal.
