Manchester United and Anthony Martial are looking to arrive at a conclusive decision regarding the player’s future as Tottenham Hotspur await patiently.
“I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct.” This was Mourinho’s stance on players wanting to leave. But Tottenham Hotspur will tell you that this is not the case. The North London club are keen on Martial, who has expressed his desire to leave, but reportedly the Manchester United manager is simply uninterested.
‘Wasting your time’
Manchester United have told Tottenham they’re wasting their time in attempts to sign Anthony Martial this summer. Jose is ready to offload the Frenchman but not to a local rival according to MEN. The 22-year-old is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford. However, Ed Woodward is reluctant to lose the player and is willing to trigger the one-year extension.
Spurs and Chelsea are both interested in the attacker and there has been an initial approach from North London.
United’s ongoing interest in Toby Alderweireld made a swap deal a possibility. But their refusal to let Martial join Spurs is a major stumbling block.

Martial leaves pre-season
Anthony Martial prematurely left Manchester United’s pre-season tour in America. Initially, the reports hinted on the club agreeing on a move for him. But it was revealed that he had left for Paris to join his wife, who is expecting a child. Jose Mourinho also confirmed the reason for his departure after the International Champions Cup game against AC Milan.
“I found out that Martial was going to Paris when he told me,” Mourinho told reporters.“It was two or three days ago. When it is personal reasons, everyone analyses that the way they think is the correct way. When a man is going to be a father, in this case, it’s the second time he is going to be a father, and he decides it is very important for him to go, nobody has the right to stop him to go.”
Martial is not expected to return to the United States. He will travel to Manchester and join the squad before the friendly against Bayern Munich.
Mourinho’s reluctance to sell Martial to a direct rival is understandable. Especially when the club have the option to activate a year extension in his contract. However, as he had mentioned it is not advisable to keep hold of a player who is unwilling to stay. The Red Devils should cash and look to address other weakness in their squad.
