While the Red Devils are still open to in and outs in the transfer window, Matteo Darmian, the Italian full-back might move away from the Old Trafford before the start of the new season.
The 28-year old captained United in their pre-season game against AC Milan but it was nothing more than an occasion to celebrate Darmian playing against his old club. The defender still does not believe that he is an integral part of the team and expressed his wish to leave the club.
No future at United?
Darmian played just 8 EPL games last season, providing back-up to Manchester United’s regular full-backs, Ashley Young and Valencia. And after the signing of 19-year old Diogo Dalot, the Italian might have gone further down the pecking order.
“It was an honour for me to be captain and I’m very happy. It was probably because we played against my old team.” Said Darmian.
“But yes, I still want to leave, that what I want. But we will see what happens because we don’t know. I don’t think the injury of Antonio Valencia is a big injury. I don’t know how long he needs to stay out, but at the moment he is the captain, he’s first choice.”
Jose Mourinho is also reportedly ready to part ways with the defender to make way for new faces. United are eager to bring Harry Maguire at the club and will need to make up some money for the Englishman’s transfer fee. But the manager will not allow the Italian to be sold cheaply, despite his no-show in the previous season.
Matteo Darmian also spoke about the lack of game time at United and wants to play regularly. The Italian has failed to establish himself as a first choice player since his move way back in 2015. He also opened up about his possible destination, with a move back to Italy being one of the possibility.

“I want to play more regularly. Last season I didn’t play much – that’s my objective and my ambition. That’s why I spoke with the manager and also with the club about my future.”
“I’m waiting to see what happens. If I stay I stay and I’ll do what I did up until now. If I go it is because the offer that another team makes will be good.”
“It has been a difficult decision [to want to leave]. To play for probably the best club in the world is a good thing and for me it’s an honour to play here. But we have to take decisions in our life and this is my decision. A return to Italy could be an option.”
United might find it difficult to break Leister City’s resistance in selling Maguire and with the transfer window closing in two weeks, Darmian is also running out of time.
Sometimes it is difficult to understand what is going on in Jose Mourinho’s mind. The manager knows that the likes of Darmian and Martial are not happy at the club. But he has failed to either give them a confidence about the upcoming season or to sell them and use the money to bring in new players. With time running out, United need to work hard to get their team together before 9th August.
