Manchester United return to America for the second year running as they prepare for the 2018-19 season but Alexis Sanchez and Daley Blind were the notable absentees.
Jose Mourinho takes his squad back to UCLA as Manchester United begin their pre-season. The Red Devils commence their five-game tour of America against Club America this Thursday. But the keen-eye noticed that Alexis Sanchez wasn’t among the party that jetted off across the Atlantic.
Alexis Sanchez’s absence explained
Sky Sports revealed that Alexis Sanchez wasn’t able to travel with the United squad due to visa issues. The Chilean striker, 29, accepted a 16-month suspended jail sentence in February for tax fraud in Spain. No person found guilty of fraud can be granted a visa to enter the country as per the US law. However, there is a waiver scheme and Sanchez’s lawyers are working on it to avail permission to attend the pre-season. But the process has taken longer than expected with the opening game scheduled in two days.

Ed Woodward on the importance of the pre-season tour
“The tour is a central part of the team’s preparation for a long and intense campaign and this is the second consecutive year that we will travel to the US,” Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, said. The training facilities are world class and the games will be played in front of passionate crowds.”
“The club, manager, and team always receive a great welcome when visiting America, with our millions of US fans always keen to get closer to Manchester United. The team is facing some of the world’s toughest opponents over the course of pre-season, in top-class stadiums which will allow a significant number of our supporters to get closer to the team they love.
The competitive feel throughout the summer programme will provide a great platform for the squad, giving them the best possible preparation ahead of the new campaign.”
Alexis Sanchez has had a deserved offseason in a while. The Chilean has been playing continually and it showed this season. A revitalised Sanchez might be like a new signing for the Red Devils. He’ll be the key in their quest to bring the title back to Old Trafford. On the other hand, Daley Blind was left out because he is set to return to Ajax.
