Manchester United look to boost their midfield by acquiring Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred in the summer following Manchester City’s decreasing interest in the midfielder.
This summer transfer window is set to witness Premier League giants Manchester United move in on 25-year-old midfielder Fred with the goal of strengthening their midfield for next season. After losing the title to rivals Manchester City, Jose Mourinho and his men plan for a major overhaul this summer.
According to ManchesterEveningNews, the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder was expected to join City during the winter transfer window. However, the move failed to materialize following Pep Guardiola’s interest in signing central defender Aymeric Laporte, who arrived from Athletic Bilbao for a club record £57million euros. The English Champions are now reported to have ended their interest in the Brazilian which opens the door for the Red Devils to capitalize on the situation.
After United’s win against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, Mourinho has been rumored to be interested in signing two midfielders during the transfer window. With speculation surrounding the future of Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, and 22-year-old Andreas Pereira leaving the club in the summer, United have been closely monitoring several midfielders. These include Borussia Dortmund midfielders Christian Pulisic and Julian Weigl and also Napoli and Italy international Jorginho.
“We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad,” Mourinho said. “We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick, if Marouane Fellaini leaves, we need to find a replacement for Marouane Fellaini. There is always in the group of players, in the squad, there is always a player or a couple of players, they are not playing a lot, and they will try obviously to leave.
“So we are going again to touch our squad and to believe that more than spend, spend, spend, is probably the evolution of our players. We have some young players that need to get with both hands opportunities with their evolution, so let’s see.”
Fred has seven caps with the national side and has played against David Moyes’United in the Champions League in December of 2013 having joined the Shakhtar side earlier that year.
Manchester United will be expected to be busy during the summer window and will be on a quest to strengthen their squad before the start of the next season. After losing the title to City this season by a large margin of points, United will be eager to challenge their rivals and they will start by acquiring Fred from Shakhtar which will be a huge boost for the club. It is very likely that Fred will join the Red Devils as the Brazilian is eager to play in the English Premier League.
