Barcelona is ready to make a move for Marcos Alonso as they see him as a potential successor to Gerard Pique
It has been a meteoric rise for Marcos Alonso under Antonio Conte. After experiencing the wilderness of the Championship, plying his trade at clubs like Sunderland and Bolton, the Spaniard has grown leaps and bounds, even being inducted into the PFA Team of the Season. Now, the 27-year-old could be set for another major career shift as Barcelona set their eyes on him.
Barca like Alonso and think he could go back to being a CB. He's only one of many names on their list which notably also includes Ajax's de Ligthttps://t.co/Ibn0Y4nKny #CFC

Nizaar Kinsella, Goal’s Chelsea correspondent broke the story that Barcelona want the Spaniard in their ranks. However, the surprising revelation is that the Blaugrana do not want Alonso for his wing-play. They instead, see him as a potential replacement for Gerard Pique who is on the wrong side of the 30s.
Alonso’s versatility, height, ball skills and defensive awareness are the traits that have impressed Barca head honchos. Fittingly so, given how the demands from a Barcelona’s centre-back are different to that of any other team’s centre-back. Interestingly, however, Alonso has not played as a centre-back since leaving Fiorentina. There too, his appearances as a centre-back were few and far between.
The report also goes on to say that Alonso is not the only one on Barca’s shortlist. Another notable name on that list is that of Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt. The youngster has impressed at the heart of Dutch giant’s defence over the past two seasons.
Marcos Alonso is an interesting name to emerge as a potential successor to Gerard Pique. While extremely effective at what he does, the former Real Madrid youth product is not the best ‘defender’. There are several other options out there who are much more viable, and even gettable, then the 27-year-old. It will be an unexpected and a not particularly intelligent one if Barca does sign him as a specialist centre-back.
