“I never had a chance at Chelsea” Mohamed Salah reveals after winning the Player of the Year

It’s been a wonderful season for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian has been crowned the PFA Player of the year, and he had a lot to say about the Premier League and Chelsea.

An incredible season for Liverpool, the 25-year-old has gone to score 41 goals and produce a further 13 assists in all competitions and is only two goals short of breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2007/08 record for most goals in a season. Not only that, as of right now Mohamed Salah is in a very special club with the Egyptian tied for the most goals in a single Premier League season with Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luis Suarez, all at 31. And all this after a rather miserable time at Chelsea, which many believed would repeat at Liverpool.

What a season it has been for the Egyptian superstar!!

But while Mohamed Salah did flourish at AS Roma scoring 34 goals and assists a further 24 in 83 games, there were questions asked when Liverpool shelled out 42 million to bring the former Chelsea flop back to the Premier League. But 31 goals in just the Premier league later, the world and Liverpool fans praise Jurgen Klopp for his ingenuity and craftiness.

That kind of form and his sheer class in the Premier League this season has been the reason that the Reds are doing so well, and along with the likes of Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah is a part of easily the best trio in world football at the moment. But with the former Chelsea man failing to impress in his first spell in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, many expected him to repeat the performance.

However, unfortunately for Chelsea, things really hasn’t gone their way, with not one but three former players flourishing in the Premier League after leaving Stamford Bridge. The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne doing well in England after a second chance seems to have inspired Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian made the most of his second chance.

The 25-year-old has gone to help Liverpool through the loss of Philippe Coutinho and also lead them to a Champions League semi-final for the first time in almost ten years. Not only that, Salah has gone to win the PFA Player of the Year and had a lot to say about his time in England. “Yes, I think from the first day I left the Premier League it was always in my mind,” he said. “I didn’t have my [chance] in Chelsea so it was clear in my mind I would come back and show everyone my focus.

“I’m happy for the award and [for] my team-mates and what we’re doing in the Champions League. I think I left then I came back as different person, man, player, as I said, I didn’t have my chance [at Chelsea]. It’s very special to play for a club like Liverpool in the semi-final and the atmosphere at Anfield is great,” he further added. “[I’m] very excited to play against Roma because I have old friends there.”

Author’s take:

Bringing in Mohamed Salah for just €42 million will go down as one of Jurgen Klopp shrewdest deals, especially given how prolific the 25-year-old has been. But while no one could have predicted this, Liverpool will have a tough time next season especially with the likes of Real Madrid and even Barcelona very interested in the Egyptian’s services.
