Charlie Nicholas revealed recently on a Sky Sports programme how Olivier Giroud vetoed a move to Chelsea, but ended joining them regardless
After finding first-team chances difficult to come by at Arsenal, Olivier Giroud joined Chelsea in the January transfer window for £18 million. The Frenchman had a World Cup to think about. And the move, however, derided, made sense for a player gunning for a place in France’s squad.
But in a shocking revelation, former Scottish footballer-turned-pundit Charlie Nicholas recalls how Giroud initially vetoed the move. In one of the talk shows, Nicholas revealed he only joined the Blues because they wanted him. But manager Antoine Conte was unperturbed as he would be leaving the club anyways later.
While Giroud’s transfer materialized in far from straightforward circumstances, the move hasn’t been as productive as he would’ve liked. A paltry sum of just three goals in 12 appearances in all competitions isn’t impressive by any means. However, he’s started only five of those. So Conte clearly isn’t impressed by him and now it’s easier to understand his hesitation on penning the move.
Moreover, Giroud has had to fight for a place with another arrival, Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard is the first-choice striker at Chelsea and had his own share of travails to deal with. A dip in form midway through the season is perhaps the reason behind Chelsea pushing to sign the former. But in the recent weeks, the former Real Madrid man has once again found his attacking boots.
Nicholas also pointed out how Giroud’s hold-up play and linking with Hazard holds him in a better stead to Morata. But the fans should also be thankful for what Giroud has done so far, according to him. His three goals have come against Hull City in the FA Cup and to Southampton in the Premier League, the latter in which he struck a brace to save Chelsea’s beacon from a defeat.
Giroud swapped the red of London for blue in search of greener pastures. But his situation has been more or less the same. The Frenchman needs more first-team opportunities to prove himself. And that seems to only arrive after Antonio Conte’s impending departure in the summer.
