Barcelona hints at a possible farewell for Andres Iniesta

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta is set to leave the Spanish side at the end of the season according to recent Spanish reports.

Andres Iniesta, arguably one of the greatest playmakers to have ever graced the game, is rumored to leave the Spanish giants this summer. Having won 31 trophies with the club including last night’s Copa Del Rey win against Sevilla, reports suggest that Iniesta will be on his way out and will join the Chinese League.

Speculation surrounding the 33-year-old leaving the club has been floating around ever since Iniesta hinted at his exit after the defeat to Roma in the Champions League. After securing the Copa Del Rey title with a 5-0 win against Sevilla last night, La Liga posted a picture of the midfielder with the words, “Thank you” captioned in different languages.

The Barcelona captain was on the scoresheet last night along with Lionel Messi, Phillipe Coutinho and Luis Suarez who managed to bag two goals on the night. The match was to be considered the Spaniard’s last final for the club in a glittering career for the Blaugrana.

However, Iniesta has refused to reveal his decision regarding his future at the club after the Copa Del Rey final stating: “This week I will talk about the decision I will make, we still need to win La Liga and there is time to enjoy. Nothing has changed.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted that Iniesta has been offered a chance to stay at the club. Moreover, he has not confirmed whether the Spanish international will leave the club at the end of the season. While speaking to Mundo Deportivo Bartomeu said: “I know that Iniesta has an offer, but Barca is the club of his life and he has a lifetime contract. We have the best in the world who is [Lionel] Messi, but Iniesta marks a time in the history of Barca and football.”

Furthermore,  it is rumored that Iniesta will join Chinese club Chongqing Dongdai Lifan of the Chinese Super League after a 16-year long professional career with the Blaugrana.

Author’s take:

Iniesta will forever be remembered in Barcelona folklore for years to come. ‘The Pale Knight’ will want to end the season on a high by securing the La Liga title with an unbeaten streak and it looks like it will serve as the perfect farewell for one of the greatest midfielder’s the world has seen. Whether Iniesta decides to say goodbye or stay, his legacy will remain with the club forever.
