Revealed: Club CEO takes decision on Batshuayi’s future

Borussia Dortmund Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that Borussia Dortmund are looking to sign Michy Bathusayi on a permanent basis from Chelsea

Batshuayi has set the world alight with his unexpectedly brilliant performances for Borussia Dortmund. The Belgian was allowed to leave on loan in January after Antonio Conte deemed his surplus to requirements. He came in at the Westfalenstadion as a direct replacement for Arsenal-bound Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. He has since notched 9 strikes in 14 appearances. Last weekend, however, brought an abrupt end to his weekend when he suffered ligament damage.

Now Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has confirmed that the club wants Batshuayi on a permanent basis. Although, BVB will refrain from making any move before the managerial situation is cleared at Stamford Bridge. Speaking to Sport Bild, Watzke said:

“The interest to sign him does generally exist. Chelsea already have two centre-forwards in [Alvaro] Morata and [Olivier] Giroud. First, we’ll have to wait who’ll be coaching Chelsea next season. Then we’ll see what is possible.”

Conte was the main driving force behind the Belgian’s exit from the Stamford Bridge. He refrained from giving the Belgian the opportunities that he deserved despite coming in 18 months prior, on the back of huge fan fair. Seeing his opportunities limited in London, the 24-year-old moved to Germany where he has proven his mettle as a top class striker.

Consequently, his stock has risen considerably. Chelsea wants a cool  €58 million from Dortmund but the club is only willing to offer in the region of €45 million. With a World Cup on the horizon, this transfer could go down to the wire and that is even if it happens.

Batshuayi faces a race against time to get back fit in time for the World Cup

Author’s Take

Batshuayi’s premature end to the season has dented Dortmund’s hopes of a securing a Champions League qualification spot in the Bundesliga. His prowess up top improved the team considerably. Wanting to make a permanent move for the player makes complete sense on Dortmund’s part. Chelsea, however, should not make a final decision until after they appoint a new manager.
