FC Barcelona will be going into the Champions League Quarter-final tie with a massive boost.
According to reports, Sergio Busquets is expected to return to the starting lineup against Roma on Wednesday. A valuable asset to the team, Busquets was sidelined for the two league games due to a foot injury. Hence, the Spaniard also had to sit out the international matches with Spain against Argentina and Italy.
Initially, it was reported that Busquets would miss up to three weeks of competitive football due to injury. The win against Chelsea on March 14 took a toll on the midfielder as he broke a bone in his foot. However, the 29-year old has recovered early and that too- just in time for the game against Roma. Busquets was seen training with the first team ahead of the tie and looks fit to start in the game with a charged up opposition.
The addition of Busquets to the squad would be a massive boost to the team. The midfielder is known to be the backbone of the Barcelona midfield and is often regarded as the best in his position.
“Busquets is fundamental for the team. He is the best player in the world in his position, so it’s not easy to replace him.” – Ernesto Valverde
The Spaniard’s influence on the pitch is crucial for Barcelona and his absence affects the team’s performance. In the comeback against Sevilla, Barcelona had little possession of the ball and was constantly in need of stability in the midfield. It was only after the arrival of Lionel Messi that Barcelona actually threatened the Sevilla defence.
While 29-year-old was injured, it was Ivan Rakitic who fulfilled the Busquets role. The Croatian has evolved more into a defensive midfielder who strings passes from the back. This is a contrast to the attacking role he would mostly play during his Sevilla days.
Busquets is arguably Barcelona’s most valued player after Lionel Messi. The Spaniard has a unique combination of passing, awareness, and vision which proves to be the driving force behind Barcelona. Along with Lionel Messi, it looks like he has returned in the nick of time to help Barcelona in the Camp Nou on Wednesday and get them through to the semi-final.
