Chelsea star gives his verdict on club’s current state

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes that the club is in a crucial junction at the moment with the season going either way based on performances. He firmly believes that the Blues will have to find the right path to salvage this season.

The Blues come off a string of embarrassing defeats against Bournemouth and Watford where they managed to score just a single goal and conceded seven in return. As a result, the growing speculation of Antonio Conte’s future at the club has increased manifold.

Ahead of Chelsea’s away trip to West Brom, the 32-year-old spoke to Sky Sports covering numerous issues, he started off by addressing Chelsea’s recent slump and how it’s necessary for them to recover from it. He said:

“We are at that road where you can either turn left or right. We are on a road where the sooner we have the opportunity to go down the right path the better because drawing on past experiences you have that feeling, it’s bubbling outside the club.”

Cahill cleared the air of animosity regarding reports of friction between the players and the managers. He said:

“In the club, we are fine in terms of a tight group and everyone is together; there are no falling outs or clashes with the manager. We are fine, but we need to get back on that good path as soon as we possibly can.”

The England International went on to assess Chelsea’s performance against Watford where they lost 4-1. Cahill expressed his disappointment and was critical of the side’s display at Vicarage Road. He stated:

“I didn’t recognise us…I didn’t recognise myself in that performance, I am sure on reflection the lads would say the same,” he said. “Performance-wise that was one of my worst performances of my career. But you are talking about one game, so as well as being harsh on ourselves, and rightly so, it’s one game.”

“We have had two bad results, which has caused a bit of atmosphere outside of the club, but it is only two results.”

When asked about the reason behind the slump, Cahill had no real explanation since he believes that the side worked hard but things just are not going in their favour.

Looking into the future

Cahill asserted the importance of moving forward with positive intent since a string of crucial tough fixtures lie ahead and believes that the game against West Brom can be the first step. He asserted:

“I feel this month is very important. I think when we come out of the end of February it could shape the season. We realise that. If we get the right result and performance on Monday you start getting that confidence back into the team and keep building from there.”

Author’s Take:

It is extremely crucial that Chelsea go back to winning ways with the race for the Champions League spots heating up. The Blues will have to gear up as they prepare for a visit from Barcelona. A win and an impressive display against West Brom would be an ideal way to boost their pursuit to recover this season.
