Chelsea star goes on the record saying, “My heart lies in Madrid”

Chelsea and Belgium star has made a shocking confession and has further fuelled Real Madrid transfer speculation after saying that his “heart is in Madrid”

The 25-year-old who has been in fine form for the Blues is currently undergoing talks with the club over a new contract extension. Despite that, the Belgian international has been shortlisted by La Liga giants Real Madrid to be a big part of their next Galacticos. However, while it initially looked like Thibaut Courtois would re-sign with Chelsea, the 25-year-old has gone to make a shocking confession.

The 25-year-old has been a major target for Real Madrid and with Thibaut Courtois watching his contract expire at the end of next season and Real Madrid want him to be their next goalkeeper, essentially replacing Keylor Navas. While the Blues have offered him a contract extension, which if Courtois signs it would make him [according to reports from the Metro] the highest paid goalkeeper in the world by signing a new deal, which could end up doubling his current salary.

The Belgium international has developed into one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, since arriving from Belgium side Genk seven years ago. However, in an interview with Belgian news outlet Sport/Foot Magazine, Courtois went on to say, “My personal situation is related to the city of Madrid. My two children live there with their mum.

I have my daughter every day on FaceTime. She often tells me that she misses me. My son is still too small to communicate like that. Whenever I have the opportunity, I try to return to Spain. As a situation, it is not always easy. Yes, my heart is in Madrid. It is logical and understandable.

Chelsea has been struggling in Premier League and have already conceded defeat in the title race, with them sitting fourth and a massive 19 points behind leaders Manchester City. However, with back-to-back defeats, first 3-0 against Bournemouth and then 4-1 against Watford, things certainly don’t look good for Chelsea and Antonio Conte. But despite that Thibaut Courtois has said that he plans to stay focused on the club and the upcoming games.

He further added “I understand that the rumours are coming back today, as we are talking about a new goalkeeper there [at Real]. But I do not pay much attention to that, I stay focused on Chelsea. If they want me, they have to contact Chelsea.

We’ll see. But they have not done that. What is certain is that one day I will return to Madrid. I love Spain, I love the city, I spent three wonderful years there [with Atletico Madrid]. It is there that I became an adult.”

Author’s take:

Losing Thibaut Courtois will certainly be a massive loss to Chelsea and thus they somehow need to tie the Belgian down to a long-term deal, but that only means that clubs get him for free. Despite, the possibility of a new deal, the 25-year old’s comments do mean that there is still a chance that Real Madrid can make an approach to sign.
