This January we have already witnessed some groundbreaking deals. It all started with Virgil Van Dijk’s move to Liverpool as the Reds made him the costliest defender in the world. Phillipe Coutinho’s move to Barcelona ended a long drawn out saga and Sanchez swapped the red of London for the red of Manchester. Now, Icardi’s move to Santiago Bernabeu will only add to the list of glamorous move that has gone through this past month. The 24-year-old himself sent a seemingly parting message to Inter fans with an Instagram post.
Madrid, the traditional big spenders, has historically remained quiet in the January window. This will be the highest fee they have paid for a player in the winter window. According to Argentine Journalist Leandro Montoya, Icardi is on his way to the Spanish capital. “Mauro Icardi travels to Madrid at the moment to seal the move with Real. An express move of €106 + Kovacic return would have convinced the leadership Nerazzurra to let go of his maximum gunner in the absence of just 2 days to close the market passes.”
Kovacic’s involvement in the deal is sure to come as a huge surprise as the Croatian was getting game time under Zinedine Zidane. He even started the El Classico back in December ahead of the likes of Isco and Gareth Bale. His return to San Siro will come at a great time as Inter has just sent Joao Mario out on a loan deal to West Ham.
Madrid seems to have finally made a splash in the transfer market. The price is affordable for a player of Icardi’s stature and his quality is undoubted. This will signal the end of Benzema’s reign as the top striker at Real with Icardi giving a huge boost to their goalscoring chances going into the second half of the season.
