Chelsea lose out on AS Roma star thanks to a surprising revelation from Antonio Conte

Chelsea has hit a wall in their chase for Roma and former Manchester City star Edin Dzeko, as the Blues look to strengthen their team.

The Blues have been looking for someone who can potentially help the struggling Alvaro Morata, who has seen has had his fair share of troubles in front of goal this season. With that in mind, manager Antonio Conte has targeted the likes of Peter Crouch, Andy Carroll and even Roma’s Edin Dzeko. But according to reports from the Mirror and, talks with the 31 year old Dezko had advanced the furtherest.

However, now it looks like the deal has hit a wall with manager Anotnio Conte revealing that he sees no reason why second striker Michy Batshuayi should leave. The Belgium has struggled to get game time and with form issues, and with the World Cup on the horizion was looking for a loan spell so that he could fight for a place at Russia 2018.

But now according to reports from the Express, talks with Dezko have broken down and Conte is more than open to keep Batshuayi at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old started one of the first games in a long time for Chelsea against Newcastle in the FA Cup and managed to impress, bagging himself a brace.

In an interview, Antonio Conte went on to say, “Loan? I don’t know what happens. But when you play Premier League, Champions League and then FA Cup, if we have three strikers it is the minimum. We have to see what happens in the market. It doesn’t mean Michy has to go on loan. We have a lot of competitions. Three strikers is the minimum.

I know there is a World Cup and every player wants to play to push the coach of their national team. But this is another situation. In this case, if the club decides to add another player, I don’t know if Michy wants to stay or go on loan, it will be the player’s decision not my decision.

I’m ready to continue to work with these players. I’m very happy. But I don’t know what happens with the transfer market.”

Author’s take:

The 24-year-old Michy Batshuayi was once one of the most exciting young central forwards in the game and is certainly someone with a perfect combination of power, technique, pace and an uncanny knack to score goals. However, he does look very low on confidence and while there have been sparks of brilliance every now and then, there has been no consistency from the Belgian something that Antonio Conte looks for.

Maybe the brace against Newcastle should increase his confidence and may even be the turning point for him and his relationship with Antonio Conte.
