However, Manchester City hasn’t officially announced the signing of the defender after the defender passed his medical on Sunday. As per multiple reports in Spain and England, the 23-year-old Basque youth-product is set to be announced on Tuesday.
The French U-21 defender will become City’s record signing after they failed to beat Liverpool to the signing of the Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool signed the Dutch defender for a Premier League record fee of €85 million.
Laporte’s departing statement:
Athletic, in a statement earlier in the day, revealed that club president Josu Urrutia would hold a press conference in the coming days to outline the details of Laporte’s departure.
After making his first-team debut in 2012, the French defender has grown in stature during his time at Athletic Club under the tutelage of the former Athletic manager Ernesto Valverde. In the 222 appearances the 23-year-old has made for the La Liga side, he has scored 10 times while holding the back steady for Athletic.

Further, Laporte uploaded an emotional statement on his Instagram profile, where he thanked all the Athletic fans for supporting and cheering him every time he took the field.
He wrote, “I want to thank you all for everything you have given me. I arrived as a teenager, and here I have grown up as a person and as a footballer player. I don’t want this to be a goodbye, but a see you soon. I leave a unique club […] that I won’t forget.”
The defender has made 19 appearances for the Spanish side this season and has been a rock-solid presence for Athletic since his debut. It would be difficult for Cuco Ziganda to replace the French international given his impact for the Spanish side
On the other hand, for City, it would be a fruitful signing since Laporte has fit right into the requirements of the Spaniard Pep Guardiola concerning a centre-back who can play the ball forward.
Not only can Laporte pass the ball fervently, but also could link up with Ottamendi and Stones at the back for a three-man defence.
