Chelsea inch closer to securing Serie A ace

The Blues have reportedly agreed a £25 million fee for AS Roma full-back Emerson Palmieri with the medical scheduled to happen soon.

The Brazil-born player will be Chelsea’s second signing in the transfer window after landing Ross Barkley early on from Everton.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the fee of £25 million has been agreed by both parties with £17.5 million being paid up front and the other £8 million in the form of add-ons.

The Blues were interested in signing Edin Dzeko as the part of the deal, but could not come to an agreement with the wage demand and the contract length requested by the player.

Palmieri would be the second choice left-back for Chelsea with Marcos Alonso ruling the left-flank at the moment. The 23-year-old will be a much-needed addition to Antonio Conte’s squad keeping the fixture congestion in mind.

What next for Chelsea as the deadline nears?

With Edin Dzeko deal off the table, Chelsea could focus their attention for their third striker with Oliver Giroud leading the list at the moment in the dying days of the transfer window. Although, it is being rumoured that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reluctant to sell the Frenchman to a direct rival.

Chelsea is desperate for more signings, especially a third striker due to Alvaro Morata’s dismal run in front of goal and Conte’s lack of trust in Michy Batshuayi.

The London side had high expectations for this transfer window with several players shortlisted but could not seal a deal with any of them. Chelsea was linked with a flurry of players from Alex Sandro to Islam Slimani.

Author’s Take:

Palmieri is a good addition to the Blues as he could play as a backup to Marcos Alonso who might get fatigued given his playtime this season. The youngster could slowly get into the Premier League groove and make a name for himself at Stamford Bridge with age by his side.
