Pep Guardiola was at the end of a grilling from Gary Neville after the former’s comments on City’s transfer activities
Gary Neville has been praised for his work as a TV pundit with his insight into the tactics and knowledge about a team’s working known to one and all. Another thing that he is known for is the constant banter with fellow pundit Jamie Carragher. Both of them have shown their humorous side often, taking friendly shots at each other on twitter. However, it is Pep Guardiola who was at the end of Neville’s trolling this time around.
Heart of the matter
Guardiola recently spoke about how he has to manage a budget in the transfer market despite City’s riches. Speaking ahead of City’s FA Cup match against Cardiff City, Guardiola said, “When you want to handle four competitions sometimes you have to be lucky with injuries. Otherwise, you need 22 top players for every position. People don’t believe this but today 22 top players is too expensive to buy, even [for] City.”
“Their salaries we cannot pay. There are budgets for the transfer and we cannot pay. In the future, it might change but we haven’t paid more than £80 million- £100 million for one player. We cannot pay that right now, it is the truth.”
Taking a swipe at Guardiola’s comments, Neville put out the following tweet:
If City sign Laporte they will have spent 100m more than anyone won’t they ? Im not sure why City are peddling this stuff… https://t.co/88aEGqmu40

Notably, City is on the verge of completing a £57 million move for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte. The 23-year-old will be their first signing of this window after they pulled out of a deal for Alexis Sanchez who instead moved on to their local rivals Manchester United. The youngster will the fifth defender bought since the start of last season. City spent a cool £198.7 million last summer on five players including world record deals for a fullback and goalkeeper.
Guardiola’s comments seem laughable to me. No matter what he says, City has a boatload of cash lying around and they can rarely be outbid by any club in the transfer market. More often than not, they get who they want.
