Carlos Tevez spoke how his compatriot is a natural phenomenon whereas Ronaldo’s hard work made him what he is
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two greatest players of this generation. These two have redefined the modern game with their skill and their hard work. Ever since Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid in 2009, the two have been in direct competition with each other owing to Messi’s allegiance to Barcelona. Several pundits and fans have taken their side in the Messi vs Ronaldo debate. However, it is the players’ inputs, their former or current teammates, that shed light on the real difference between the duo.
Now, Lionel Messi’s former international teammate Carlos Tevez has given his two cents on this issue. Quoted by ESPN Argentina, Tevez said, “Cristiano is totally different to Messi. When Leo was starting out, he didn’t touch a gym. [But] Cristiano was there in the morning, afternoon and evening, all the time.”
Tevez saw Cristiano’s rise from a lanky winger to a surreal goalscorer first hand during his time with the Portuguese at Manchester United. He spent two seasons with the Red Devils with the duo going their separate ways at the end of 2008-09 season.
“Cristiano had to work and prepare himself to be the best, while for Leo it comes natural.”
“Those are the two greatest differences that I see between the two best players on the planet.”
“Messi plays another sport. For Messi to score three goals [in any given game] is normal.”
Tevez is currently in his third stint with Boca Juniors. He played for Boca as a teenager and has always said that he’ll end his career with the Argentine giants. The 33-year-old was, notably, the highest paid player in the world last year earning a reported £650,000-a-week with Shanghai Shenhua during his one year Chinese adventure.
I personally agree with Tevez’s comparison of the two. While Messi has the magic, the unrivalled natural ability, Ronaldo is the product of rigorous labour and diligence. They have made goalscoring look so easy that even the best of players look mediocre in front of them. The feats they achieve on a regular basis are truly unparalleled. With both of them now in their 30s, we should just sit back and enjoy their game while they are still at their best.
