Chelsea legend approves the Blues’ pursuit of Serie A star

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea linked AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko would be a decent signing.

Lampard, who is the clubs’ all-time leading goal scorer, has given green light to his former club for Dzeko’s acquisition. Chelsea has been on the lookout for a forward, with Andy Caroll and Peter Crouch some of the names linked to the Bridge. However, former England and Chelsea midfielder stated that Ediz Dzeko would be a better choice.

In an interview with the Evening Standard, Lampard highlighted that the Bosnian forward offers “something different”. Having lost the experience of Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic, the Blues have looked a pale version of themselves. After a humiliating loss to a below-par Arsenal side in the League Cup semifinal, Conte bemoaned the club’s inability to add reinforcements to their squad.

Dzeko a player of Chelsea’s stature, as against Caroll, Crouch: Frank Lampard

The Blues are currently short on attacking threats, which is why they are eager to land Dzeko from Roma. Lampard has lauded their efforts for targetting a player who finished as the top scorer in Serie A last season. He said,”Carroll and Crouch are not the kind of names Chelsea have gone for in the past. But January is a tough one and [Alexis] Sanchez is a one-off. The majority of the time you’re looking at making minor adjustments.”

He further added,”If it’s a Crouch or Carroll, it’s just a back-up but Dzeko is something different. He is a very good player, an all-round striker with all the attributes. In terms of investing heavily, that will come in the summer. It’s very easy to say that Crouch and Carroll are not Chelsea signings but it’s not an indication of where Chelsea are going. It is more a sign that the manager doesn’t think they strengthened enough last summer.”

Those words will mirror Conte’s complaints that the current crop at Stamford Bridge is not strong enough. Indeed, their roster has looked a little thin in terms of quality this year. The Blues are now out of contention of the Premier League and the League Cup, with the FA Cup looking the most realistic opportunity for silverware. Conte’s men will clash with Barcelona in the Champions League for a berth in the quarter-finals. With the Catalans being the only team unbeaten across the top five leagues, Chelsea has a tough road ahead of them this season.

Edin Dzeko will be a great addition to Chelsea’s forward line

And Lampard has told his former club to pull up their socks adding that their testing season might end on a positive note. He said,”This is when the experienced players are vital – there is nothing wrong with getting everyone together and reminding everyone to push. Chelsea does need to get their act together. They have the spirit there. They have the players.”

He continued,”When Chelsea get it right, as we saw last season, they can take on anybody. It is certainly not the time to give up.” Conte’s men are third in the league table, only three points behind Manchester United. The Blues will play Newcastle United up next, in the 4th round of the FA Cup.

Author’s Take

Chelsea’s season has been marred by underwhelming performances from players who were brought in as replacements for Costa and Matic. Now, with Lampard’s verdict on their side, the Blues should move quickly to land Dzeko and his team-mate Emerson Palmieri. However, Lampard highlighted the right thing that, Caroll and Crouch won’t fare any better than Michy Batshuayi.
