Chelsea has lined up Olivier Giroud as back up option should their move for Edin Dzeko fall through
Chelsea is looking to make a bid of around £30 million for Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud as per reported by Express. The Frenchman has seen his first-team opportunities hard to come by this season, He has started only once in the Premier League despite being a regular fixture in Europa League starting eleven. His chances are expected to reduce even further as Gunners get closer to bringing in Pierre Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

The German side was looking for a player plus cash deal initially, with Giroud being their intended target. However, according to recent reports, they have now dropped the ball on any such deal and will only accept straight cash. With the Gabonese hitman expected to cost around £60 million, Giroud’s departure could make financial sense for the Arsenal board.
Chelsea, on their part, has been on the lookout for a target man all throughout this transfer window. They have been linked with players like Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch and Ashley Barnes to compete with Alvaro Morata. The Spaniard has been below par the last few months and missed the crucial cup tie against Arsenal because of a back injury.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s deal for Dzeko has dragged on much longer than expected. The player has experience in the Premier League having previously turned out for Manchester City from 2011 to 2016. Although, the move for Emerson Palmieri is not expected to be affected by Dzeko’s decision. The AS Roma left-back will be joining in a few days time if reports are to be believed.
Wenger’s thoughts on this transfer will be conflicted. The Arsenal manager shares a great relationship with Giroud and is willing to let the 31-year-old leave to secure more game time before World Cup. However, having already lost Alexis Sanchez to a direct rival in Manchester United, he would not want to do the same again. Giroud was previously linked with a move to Everton but his wish to stay in London meant that the deal wasn’t agreed.
Chelsea’s striker situation is befuddling everyone right now. They have a talented youngster in the form Michy Batshuyai in their ranks but Antonio Conte is not willing to play him. He showed a great deal of poise and gelled well with his teammates in his latest start as Chelsea beat Brighton 4-0 last weekend. However, the manager wants a target man and Giroud fits the profile. His under-rated passing ability will also be of great help for the Blues.
