Lionel Messi could leave Camp Nou for free due to a clause in his contract

Barcelona superstar and five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi could be able to leave the club on a free transfer thanks to a shocking clause in his contract.

It took the club nearly six months to agree to a potential deal with Lionel Messi and with that a brand new four-year contract worth 500-a-week. However, now thanks to a clause inserted in the Argentine’s contract, there is a 10% chance that he could leave Barcelona on a free transfer despite there being a 700 million release clause.

According to Marca and El Mundo, there is a clause inserted into the 30-year-old’s contract, that has to do with the violent and volatile political situation in Catalonia. It further adds that the if there is a secession and Barcelona had to leave the La Liga and were unable to join either the English, French or the German leagues, then Lionel Messi would be free to leave the club.

However, given the fact that the Catalan giants have already made Messi the world’s highest paid player after a rather long negotiating session, they wouldn’t want him to leave for free. The report further adds that the club has already considered all the complications from the political climate and only then agreed to the deal with the superstar.

But while Manchester City would his prime destination with former manager Pep Guardiola leading the Citizens, despite that it looks highly unlikely that Lionel Messi would ever leave the club, especially after his comments, during the announcement of his new contract.

In the press-conference, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said, “We had been needing to do the signing for some time and now it is done, and I am happy to be at this club which is my home.

I wanted to continue all my life here, I always said that I wanted to stay here for all my career and finish at Barcelona, it was my dream. I want to continue winning trophies for the club.”

Author’s take:

While the political situation in Catalonia is volatile to say the least, there is a good chance that Barcelona would remain in the La Liga if Catalonia is granted their independence. However, losing Lionel Messi would be a devastating blow for the club and could potentially mean a lot of things for fans all around the world and even the footballing world.
