Former Liverpool defender, Phil Thompson believes that Antonio Conte will have questions for the Chelsea board after missing out on highly sought Dutchman, Virgil Van Dijk.
Liverpool announced their first signing in the transfer window by snapping up centre-back Virgil Van Dijk for £75 million from Southampton. Chelsea were rumoured to be interested in the Dutch International as well.
The Blues missed out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the previous transfer window after the England International preferred a move to the Merseyside on the deadline day.
Thompson’s thoughts on Chelsea’s defence
Being a central defender himself, Thompson shared his point of view on the current state of Chelsea’s defence in an interview with Sky Sports. He said:
They’re a fine team but I think if you scratch beneath that main 11 there’s not a lot there to come through, Antonio Conte needs strengthening in all areas of his team, with David Luiz out of favour.
“They are another side who were probably looking to entice Virgil van Dijk, so Conte will probably be questioning why Liverpool were able to outbid themselves with such an outlay and they may feel disappointed they missed out there.
“I think that will upset the manager and the fans as they don’t want to be left behind.”
Chelsea have found their rhythm back and will hope to continue their dominance against fifth-placed Arsenal.
As Thompson mentioned, the Chelsea lacks severe depth in their defence. With Luiz’s exit looming, Chelsea will have to find a prospective candidate as an addition to their back line. With a huge number of fixtures coming by with little gap, rotation is critical in order to avoid injuries or fatigue, Conte cannot just rely upon the likes of the defenders he has right now to make it all the way till the end of the season.
