Chelsea set to negotiate deal with defender over a new contract

The Blues are expected to open contract talks with defender Andreas Christensen in the new year.

Chelsea have enjoyed a good defending record by conceding only 14 goals this season so far. Some of the credit goes to young Andreas Christensen who has been rock solid for the Blues alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill.

The 21-year-old was recalled by Conte after his 2-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach ended. The Danish international current deal with Chelsea ends in 2020 but after seeing the youngster’s stellar run this season, the club wants to secure the youngster’s future at the club.

Christensen has taken over David Luiz’s position in the starting line up for the Blues. Christensen is expected to be rewarded for his fine performances and get a huge jump on his wages which currently stands at £35,000 per week.

The youngster joined the club’s academy in 2012 from Bronby and has started 16 games for the Blues under Antonio Conte.

Chelsea’s loan technical coach Eddie Newton feels that the youngster would be a huge asset for the club.

Newton on Christensen’s future

Newton stated in an interview with Chelsea TV that Christensen is a footballer that the Blues cannot afford to let go and went on to praise his talent. He stated: “Andreas is a player that we can definitely have here for the next 10 years. He is another John Terry for me, and has that same kind of stature because he has got that ability.

He also mentioned the defender’s contribution in the matches against the top-flight teams this season. He said:

“This season, he stepped in against Tottenham and Manchester United and it was like he has been there all his life. He is an incredible footballer and one this club should keep hold of very tightly.”

Author’s Take

Christensen’s performances at such an age have shown that he is definitely capable of reaching great heights. Chelsea should not commit the mistake of letting him go as they have done with several other players in the past. Christensen with his temperament and awareness would flourish for the Blues in the coming years.
