Chelsea’s leader Gary Cahill was all praises for fellow defender Andreas Christensen and backed him to improve as time progresses.
Cahill believes that the 21-year-old has the talent to start every week for Chelsea. Christensen was brought in by Conte from his two-year loan spell at Bundesliga club Borrusia Monchengladbach.
Christensen has been a constant presence in the back three for the Blues, ever since their crucial 1-0 victory against Manchester United earlier this year.
The Danish native has taken advantage of Conte’s reported tiff with regular starter David Luiz and has put on consistent performances week after week.
Speaking to BT Sport ahead of Chelsea’s away game against Huddersfield Town, Cahill mentioned the progress of the Dane, he said: “He’s proven that he’s more than capable. He’s growing stronger and stronger every game he plays. It’s natural as well, you get more belief and more confidence from his performances. He’s proven to be a very good footballer”.
Cahill also went on to speak about Christensen’s on-field play, on which he stated: “You don’t have to worry every two minutes what he’s doing or what he’s up to or telling him to go here or go there. And that’s a worrying factor.”
Cahill also went on to say that Christensen is highly dependable and can be trusted to play his own game.
With David Luiz currently out due to inflammation in his knee. It seems likely that Christensen will keep his place till he returns. Even upon his return, Luiz’s place is not assured given Christensen’s stellar run so far at the back three.
Cahill addressed the situation by saying that Luiz has helped a lot in Christensen’s development. He added: “I feel he can help him along a lot, which he has been doing, he’s a very good footballer and he can only improve.”
Ever since pocketing Romelu Lukaku by not letting him have a single touch in the box, Christensen has shown Stamford Bridge that he has what it takes, to succeed at the highest level. He has gained Conte’s trust after delivering good performances and showing composure in critical situations. The young defender could go all the way if he keeps up with this high-level performances.
