Former French defender makes startling claim about Kylian Mbappe and Gareth Bale

Former French defender and ex-Paris Saint-Germain Sporting Director Alain Roche claimed that PSG’s attack is as good as Real Madrid’s

This year’s Champions League round of 16 draw gave us some mouth-watering clashes. Barcelona vs Chelsea and Juventus vs Tottenham are among them. However, the tie of the round is Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid.

PSG went out of the Champions League at this stage last season at the hands of Barcelona. Despite losing the first-leg 4-0 at Parc des Princes, a Neymar-inspired Barcelona did the unthinkable by overturning the huge deficit and beating the Parisians 6-1 at Camp Nou. This time around, however, PSG are a much stronger and much more confident unit with the likes of Neymar and Mbappe in the attack.

Several views and opinions about the various aspects of the match are sure to come out before the clubs clash for the first leg on February 14 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Former French Defender Alain Roche has set the ball rolling with his claim that Mbappe is better than Real’s club record signing Gareth Bale. As per Roche, both teams are evenly matched in attack and PSG have nothing to fear against Los Blancos.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is still ahead of Neymar, the Brazilian’s not far away”

In an interview with Le Parisien, Roche compared Madrid and PSG and pointed out that the Parisians still need to improve in other areas of the pitch. He said, “Line by line, where are Madrid stronger than PSG?”

“In attack, the two teams are equal. Mbappe is much better than Gareth Bale, Edinson Cavani scores more than Karim Benzema and, if Cristiano Ronaldo is still ahead of Neymar, the Brazilian’s not far away.”

“The Madrid midfield has an advantage in terms of automation. They ally technique, power and aggression.”

“In the middle of the defence, PSG don’t have anything to envy, although there’s no equivalent to the fighting spirit of Sergio Ramos. He’s a big match player that is not at Paris.”

“In full backs, Madrid are ahead with Dani Carvajal and especially Marcelo. Even if they don’t defend brilliantly, they have a technical ability that is hard to match.”

“In goal, Keylor Navas has more experience that Alphonse Areola, who is still a young keeper.”

Author’s Take

I personally disagree with Roche’s views on Mbappe and Bale. Admittedly, Bale has had injury issues over the past two seasons meanwhile Mbappe has shot himself in the upper echelons of footballing world with his displays over the same period. At the same time, it is Bale’s injuries because of which people forget how good the Welshman actually is. He makes an impact whenever he is on the pitch. Despite appearing for a total of 563 minutes on the pitch, he has already contributed to 7 goals for Real. It is only a matter of time before the 28-year-old strings together a run of games and reaffirms his place as one of the best players in the world.
