The Catalan club has been linked with Mesut Ozil for quite some time now. But the German wants the club to move faster to sort things out.
Barcelona and their struggle to find the attacking midfielder has become quite a tale in the football world now. The Catalans failed to sign Marco Verratti or Philippe Coutinho in the last transfer window and the Club turned their attention to Mesut Ozil thereafter. The ex-Real Madrid star is reportedly excited to don the Blue and Red strips at Camp Nou but wants the Barca board to move quickly.
According to the reports in Mundo Deportivo, player’s agent has informed Barcelona to make a decision before the end of 2017. The Arsenal midfielder will be free to discuss his future from January as his contract is set to expire in June 2018. The Camp Nou outfit has been heavily linked with the German in the recent months but they have not expressed their desire to sign the midfielder publicly.
A Backup plan?
The reports coming from Spain suggest that Barca’s general manager Pep Segura and technical secretary Robert Fernandez are a huge fan of the German’s gameplay. But the club has shortlisted Ozil only as the backup plan for Coutinho. The Catalan club pursued the Brazilian in the last transfer window but Liverpool had no intentions of letting him go. The Merseyside club also rejected Barcelona’s three bids in the process.
Mesut Ozil is also a part of the dramatic transfer rumors at Arsenal as the midfielder along with Alexis Sanchez. The duo has not signed the contract extensions yet as their contracts expire in June 2018. Arsene Wenger has repeatedly confirmed that both the players will not be sold in January.

But the Frenchman’s comments have not stopped other clubs from pursuing Ozil away from the Emirates Stadium. Along with Barcelona, Manchester United are also interested in signing the German international.
The German has returned to his best after a below-par start to the season. The midfielder has scored two and assisted 5 in EPL for Arsenal.
It is a good thing that Ozil wants to sort things out way before his contract ends. But the 29-year old isn’t really the long-term solution at Barcelona. With Iniesta in the twilight of his career and Rakitic lacking the creativity, the Catalans should try to get their hands on Coutinho again. In case they cannot break the resistance of the Reds, Barca board should look for a younger player.
