Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante admits that fellow players need to step in to get the best out of Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Tiemoue Bakayoko has struggled in the blue shirt ever since his 40 million transfer from the Ligue 1 champions Monaco. The French international has received backlash from fans and critics likewise after a string of poor performances. The 23-year old was substituted at halftime in Chelsea’s defeat to West Ham this weekend.
N’Golo Kante revealed to the evening standard that Bakayoko has been working hard of late and everyone has to chip in for his progress. In an interview, the PFA player of the year said “Tiemoue played a good game [against West Ham], but at half-time, the manager decided to change the tactics to put Pedro in because he is more offensive. That’s why he was substituted but he was doing well. He is training hard and giving his best.
We have to make him play in the best way. But not just Tiemoue, for everyone. We have to work together for the good of the team, for trying to win games. That is what we train to do.”
N’Golo Kante further admitted that Tiemoue Bakayoko is a professional and is enjoying his stint with the club so far. He stated that the 23-year-old is more than welcome anytime to come and seek help. “If he needs advice, I can give it to him,” he further added “But it is the same at every club – try to work in training, to understand what the coach wants and give your best in the game. It is the same everywhere.”
Bakayoko faced a lot of flak for his recent performances as he has not been the conventional center Midfielder that Chelsea desperately requires alongside Kante. While not an atypical midfielder, the Frenchman from Monaco is more of a combative defensive midfielder, who can act as a pivot between defense and attack.
However, things haven’t exactly gone Bakayoko’s way this season and it looks like he’s still adjusting to the Premier League. Chelsea has also struggled and currently sit 11 points behind the leaders Manchester City having played an extra game and their Champions League campaign has not gone smoothly either and they failed to top their group.
Chelsea finds themselves in a spot of bother at the halfway mark of the season. Kante’s partnership with Matic was crucial in their instrumental title win last year. With Matic gone, the responsibility lies in the shoulders of Tiemoue Bakayoko who hasn’t been able to replicate the midfield dominance. There is scope for improvement for the midfielder with age on his side and can go all the way with the right guidance.
A good performance against Huddersfield Town may be the start of a good phase for the French midfielder, who shone at Monaco.
