Chelsea enter race to sign Arsenal and Liverpool target

Liverpool and Arsenal are preparing bids for Thomas Lemar but seem to face stiff competition from Chelsea

After a disappointing summer transfer window, Antonio Conte is looking to set the record straight next summer. The Blues have entered the race to sign 22-year-old Monaco Ace Thomas Lemar. The Frenchman was the centre of a two-way battle between Liverpool and Arsenal. After a sublime season for Leonardo Jardim’s men, Lemar piqued the interest of both the English heavyweights. Jurgen Klopp’s side submitted a €90 million bid for Lemar which was followed by a €100 million bid from Arsenal.

Monaco, however, was adamant that Lemar would not be let go in the summer. The 22-year-old was himself apprehensive about moving to the Premier League and consequently, stayed at Stade Louis II. The Principality club has already been dumped out of Europe after their sensational run in the Champions League last season. On the other hand, they are faring much better in Ligue 1; Monaco currently sits 3rd, 9 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

L’Equipe reports that Liverpool and Arsenal are preparing fresh bids for Lemar. Both the clubs are looking to compensate for high profile departures before-hand. The Reds are bracing themselves for Phillipe Coutinho’s exit as the Brazilian continues to interest Barcelona. Arsenal, on the other hand, is set to lose contract rebels Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. The reports continue to state that Chelsea might enter the race for Monaco ace.

Thomas Lemar on his way to the Premier League?

Lemar’s versatility, dribbling, passing and crossing abilities will be hugely beneficial for either of the English clubs. The player returned at the weekend after a month out due to a shoulder injury. He has been involved in 4 goals in the league this season and completes 1.3 dribbles per game. The youngster’s defensive output is not too shabby either, he makes a combined 2 tackles and interceptions per game. All in all, at 22-year-old, Lemar is already a complete package.

Author’s Take

Thomas Lemar was a mainstay of Monaco’s revolutionising team of last season. He saw many of his teammates leave this summer but decided to stay put himself. Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Benjamin Mendy moved to the Premier League while Kylian Mbappe moved to local rivals PSG. However, the player must have realised by now that Monaco overachieved last season and is highly unexpected to reach those heights again. He must make a smart decision about his future and commit himself to a club whose strengths match his own.
