Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has admitted that he rejected a move to Real Madrid, for a move to Old Trafford.
Pogba had completed an eye catching then-world record £89m move from Juventus to Man Utd, in summer 2016.
The French international has now admitted that he refused advances from current European champions, Real Madrid, and that he does not regret it.
“To be honest, Real Madrid came to me and I was thinking to go there, and I was thinking to go to Manchester United too,” he told the Beyond the Pitch podcast.
“But I always felt it in my heart. My heart told me to come back here [Manchester], I don’t know why, I didn’t know what was going to happen.
“But I did it, and I don’t regret. I never regret my choice.”
The 24-year-old was an academy product at Old Trafford, and had left the Red Devils for Juventus in 2012 on a free transfer. He rejoined Man Utd after 4 years at the Old Lady, during which he won 4 Serie A titles and featured in a Champions League final.
Pogba is currently serving a 3-game ban for violent conduct in the Premier League, after receiving a red card stamp on Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin.
After a difficult first season, the star midfielder has been coming into his own this season. He has scored 3 and assisted 5 goals in only 8 Premier League games so far.
Author’s Take –
The football landscape might have been very different to what it is right now, if Pogba’s move to Real Madrid had indeed materialized. Although Pogba might have missed out on the 2 Champions League titles the Los Blancos have lifted in the past two seasons, he still has reasons not to regret his decision.
The Frenchman is certainly more influential for Man Utd, where he is their key source of creativity. At Real Madrid, surrounded by a galaxy of stars, he would have to alter his playstyle, and play second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Being a United academy product, he is also much more revered by the Old Trafford faithful than he would be at the Bernabeu, with Real fans especially having a notorious reputation for not appreciating their players.
