Virat Kohli is the biggest name in Cricket World right now without any doubt. He is India’s best cricketer today and for years to come. The Delhi-born cricketer has a career which everyone would be jealous of. The records books are currently running out of pages for him and there is absolutely no stopping him. Indian fans have literally remembered his records like Bollywood songs now.
But there are some little-known facts about the Indian skipper which fans would love to know.
Let’s take a look at 12 of them:
#1 First and only Indian to score a century in a debut match at World Cup
2011 World Cup will always be remembered as the World Cup where Dhoni played the captain’s knock in the final. But, there was also a 22-year old who was looking for opportunities. And he gleefully grabbed the very first one presented to him.
Virat Kohli scored a century in India’s opening match against Bangladesh and became the first and only Indian to score a century at World Cup debut. India won the match without much trouble and Kohli’s 100 was overshadowed because of Sehwag’s monstrous 175 but the star had arrived and he was here to stay.
#2 He holds the record for fastest century by an Indian player
Virat Kohli and run-chase is a love story for ages. In one such run-chase against mighty Aussies, Virat Kohli scored a century in just 52 balls and made a mockery of Australia’s 359. Virat along with Rohit and Dhawan chased the target of 359 with 9 wickets in hand.
#3 Kohli has scored 32 ODI centuries and only Tendulkar has scored more tons than him
While Tendulkar was breaking records for fun, there was no one around to break his records and they seemed safe for years to come. But just 4 years after his retirement, his record of 49 ODI centuries is under a serious threat by the Indian captain.
Virat Kohli has scored 32 ODI centuries and he has already surpassed the likes of Pointing and Jayasuriya. Only Tendulkar with his 49 centuries is ahead of him. But with Kohli’s form and age on his side, you wouldn’t want to bet against him breaking Little Master’s record.
#4 Only player to score 3 hundred in first 3 innings as a test captain
Virat Kohli’s rise as a test captain has been phenomenal but he has made sure that doesn’t affect his batting. He gave the very first glimpse of leading from the front in his first 3 innings as a test captain where he scored 3 consecutive centuries. No other test captain has ever done that. All 3 centuries were against the deadly Kangaroo bowling attack in their own backyard.
#5 Unbeaten in 19 consecutive tests as a captain
The Number 1 ranked side in ICC rankings, India are a team to beat right now. From August 2015 to February 2017, that was actually the case where India were undefeated for 19 consecutive tests. They won 14 matches and drew just 4 under Kohli’s captainship. The streak was finally broken against Australia.
#6 Most 200+ partnerships with Rohit Sharma
We might make jokes about how Rohit scores a double century every time Kohli gets run-out. But when the captain and vice-captain are in the mood, they make life very difficult for the opponents. The duo has 4 double century stands under their belt, a feat which no other pair has achieved.
#7 He was ranked 5th in the list of most marketable players by SportsPro
Virat Kohli, with his stature as the best batsman and his popularity, is definitely the face which every brand would want. SportsPro, a sports magazine ranked him 5th in the list of most marketable athletes in the coming years. He was ranked ahead of the likes of Neymar, Hazard, and Kane.
#8 His current deal with Puma is worth Rs 110 crores
Virat recently switched from Adidas to Puma. But the most marketable face is not easy to get and Puma knew it very well. Hence, Kohli’s deal of 8 years with Puma is worth Rs110 crores. One of the biggest in the country.
#9 Kohli is a tattoo-guy
Kohli’s love for body art is well known. He considers the two tattoos on his arms, a lucky charm – Golden Dragon and Samurai Warrior. the skipper has 4 tattoos in total.
#10 Intimidated by Wasim Akram
The best thing about Virat is, he doesn’t fear anyone. Michelle Johnson and Malinga have learned it the hard way. But the batsman has confessed that he was intimidated by Wasim Akram. It is a shame that we could never see Sultan of Swing bowling to India’s Run-Machine.
#11 Crazy for Sports
Virat’s first love might be cricket but the Indian skipper is also into other sports. He is a co-owner of ISL’s FC Goa team and is often seen cheering for them. He also owns the UAE Royals team in IPTL and Bengaluru Yodhas in Pro Wrestling League.
#12 The best compliment ever
“I love watching Virat Kohli bat. He reminds me of myself.”
When the most destructive batsman of all time, Viv Richards says these lines about you, you must be freaking awesome. And Virat Kohli indeed is awesome. He might have received many awards in the past, he will go on to collect a lot more in future but these lines by Viv Richards will always be the best award for Virat Kohli.
