Arsene Wenger lavishes praise on star midfielder after win over Tottenham

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has lavished praise on star playmaker Mesut Ozil after the German international picked up the Man of the match award against Tottenham.

The 29-year-old was in fine form yesterday and left his mark on the North London derby with a fine performance, as Arsene Wenger picked up his first win against Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham in the Premier League. Mesut Ozil had a hand in both goals, but it was his defensive contribution that left both critics and fans alike praising him.

Ozil’s work rate and body-language have come under constant criticism ever since he joined the Gunners, but now that he’s in his final year of his contract things have become even worse. However, in what was arguably one of the most important games of the season for Arsenal, the German international’s pressing and work-rate neutralized both left-back Ben Davis and Jan Vertonghen.

Arsene Wenger was quick to both highlight and lavish praise on the 29-year-old and even spoke about the how important the game was. “I am convinced that he had that side to his game and he can produce it. He’s an intelligent player, an intelligent man and he can add that to his game without any problem because of his qualities.

That’s encouragement for him. When he went off, he got a standing ovation – not because he’s a great football player, everybody knows that but because he added to the team that kind of defensive play that he’s not a specialist but can do.”

With most of the pre-match chatter all about a shift in the balance of power in North London, Arsene Wenger finally played his best eleven with Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez leading the line. The star-studded front three tore apart Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham and the game finally saw Alexis Sanchez score his second Premier League goal of the season.

Wenger further added “That’s what you want from the team, we had urgency, the desire and the focus, we looked always dangerous and efficient. That’s what you want. We didn’t lose defensive focus, for 90 minutes we had that consistency in our defensive focus and the team likes to go forward so we need to keep that concentration on the defensive job.”

Author’s take:

The win against Tottenham at the Emirates takes it to 11 consecutive victories at home, a 12 year best for the Gunners since they moved from Highbury. However, despite their incredible home form, Arsene Wenger and Arsenal need to improve their away record and win more games away from the Emirates.

But more so, they need to find the best out of their star-studded front trio and use the momentum from the win over Tottenham and use it against Burnley, Huddersfield and then Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United.
