Manchester United have entered into contract negotiations with Phil Jones, sources close to the players have told ESPN FC.
The 25-year-old has currently has a Contract that runs till June 2019, with an option to extend for a further year. Sources close to the player have indicated to ESPN that talks are only at an initial stage. However, both parties remain confident of a successful conclusion.
Having been riddled with long-term injuries in the past, Jones has finally been able to get a spell of games under his belt. Despite minor injury issues, he has started every Premier League game so far. He has earned rich praise from manager Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese even saying that Jones has everything he looks for in a central defender. The Preston-born defender’s performances have also earned him a recall to Gareth Southgate’s England side in the build up to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The English international has formed a robust partnership with Eric Bailly at the heart of the Red Devils defense. The duo have complemented each other well, blossoming into one of the best center-back partnerships in the league. Man Utd have kept 7 clean sheets in 8 games this season, with Stoke City the only team to breach their rearguard so far.
Although he was benched in Utd’s 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica last night, Mourinho confirmed that it was just precautionary. When asked about Jones, the manager replied, “Phil Jones was on the bench because he felt that if we really needed him, he could [play].” He added that the centre-back, famously heralded by Sir Alex Ferguson as the future Duncan Edwards, is likely to be fit for this weekend’s Premier League action.
Utd take on newly-promoted Huddersfield at the John Smith’s stadium this Saturday, before embarking on a run in which they face last season’s top 2 Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in successive fixtures.
