The Barcelona legend Xavi has criticized Barca’s change in transfer policy by saying, “They have signed players who do not fit the system.”
As Ernesto Valverde has missed out on signing Philippe Coutinho and let the star player Neymar Jr join Paris Saint Germain, Xavi has hit out on Barcelona’s transfer policy.
‘THEY COULD HAVE SIGNED BETTER ……’
Catalan legend Xavi, 37, told Marca: “I was part of an era that was so impressive that it now seems as if it’s not the same.
“They play football well, but they could have signed better.
“They have fallen asleep because five or six years ago they had the best players in the world for the Barcelona system. Now they have five or six players for it, in [Andres] Iniesta, [Jordi] Alba, [Lionel] Messi, [Gerard] Pique, Luis Suarez and [Sergio] Busquets.
“Yet Barcelona should have 11 players who fit the system. You never used to say ‘this player would fit in well at Barcelona’ because all those players were already there.
“They have signed players who do not fit the system.”
Xavi spent 17 years at the Nou Camp, winning La Liga eight times, four Champions Leagues and three Copa del Reys before leaving for Qatari club Al Sadd.
XAVI ALSO REVEALED HIS THOUGHTS IN COMPARISON OF MESSI AND RONALDO
Xavi said: “Messi is a master of the collective and individual senses. But for Ronaldo, that kind of linking up takes a lot. Messi does everything well.
“If a coach were to say ‘we’re going to play with us all running back’ then Messi would also be the best at that. If you ask Ronaldo to play with one or two touches then I don’t know if he would be the best.
“Ronaldo is [the best] as a shooter, he’s incredible at that and is a historic player.
“But with Messi, you cannot compare. He is the best player at Barcelona and he would also be the best if playing for [Diego] Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.”
When asked whether Messi is tactically stalling on a new deal in order to force the club to sign top players, Xavi said: “I don’t think he has done that, but it would be within his rights.”
Xavi has said some right words here and as we have seen in this transfer window, Barcelona has failed to sign their targets which usually is not expected from a club like Barcelona. The recent signings Barca made aren’t the perfect replacements for the players they lost. They could have signed better players, but transfer window has now ended and it will be interesting to see how Barca shape up this season.
