Seven young players to watch out for this IPL

A look at 7 youngsters who could make a name for themselves this IPL

The Indian Premier has been the perfect launching pad for youngsters to burst onto the scene with eye-catching performances over the years. Right from Shaun Marsh in the inaugural season to Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayadu and more recently Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer in the last couple of seasons, players have pushed their way into their national teams on the back of some persistent performances. Apart from the latter 3 mentioned who are under 25 but regular India players, let us have a look at 8 other youngsters who could make it big this IPL.

  1. Basil Thampi:

Bought by Gujarat Lions for 85 lakhs, base price 10 lakhs

The 2016-17 season was a breakthrough one for Thampi, as he impressed everyone with his pace. He picked up 8 wickets in 5 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s and was selected for the zonals. He has the ability to consistently bowl at 145 plus and deliver accurate yorkers, a skill worth its weight in gold in the T20 format. He was also called up as a net bowler for the Indian Team before the Pune tests to prepare them for the likes of Starc and Hazelwood. It came as no surprise when he was picked for 8 times his base price, and expect him to do justice to his price-tag with some inspiring performances.

  1. Tanmay Agarwal:

Bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 10 lakhs, base price 10 lakhs

A rookie 21-year-old, Agarwal has been plying his trade for the last 3 years on the domestic circuit. However, he rose to the limelight this season by being the top run-scorer in the inter-state T20s with 250 runs @50.00 and a staggering strike rate of 162.33. He hit a boundary every 4.16 balls during the tournament, something he’ll be looking to in the IPL as well. Being a local player and an attacking middle-order bat, he’s sure to get a decent number of games to prove his worth. He was unfortunate to miss out on the big bucks but nevertheless, he wouldn’t have gotten a bigger opportunity and he’d be looking forward to making it count.

  1. Baba Aparajith:

Playing for Rising Pune Supergiants since 2016

Aparajith is one of India’s best young batting all-rounders at the moment. He was phenomenal in India’s U-19 World Cup triumph in 2012 and has been around on the domestic circuit ever since. Aparajith has been a part of IPL squads before but hasn’t played enough matches put in impactful contributions. With R Ashwin out of this IPL, expect Aparajith to be played more often. He is in good knick, with a century against Sri Lanka U-23 a week ago. Expect him to play a pivotal role in the Supergiants campaign this season.

  1. Nitish Rana:

Playing for Mumbai Indians since 2015

23-year-old Rana was one of the finds of the Syed-Mushtaq Ali T20 2015-16, hitting 21 sixes in the tournament, the most by any player and scoring 299 runs. He represented the Mumbai Indians in 4 matches last season, hitting 70 off just 36 balls against the Gujarat Lions. Rana is tipped to be a regular this season, and his astounding strike-rate and power hitting will add to the Mumbai Indians firepower. He hasn’t been in the best of form lately but hitters like him can turn any game on its head in a few overs. He is tipped to take the aggressor role and provide a late flourish or bog down the strike rate in chases, something which he has done earlier and would hope to continue in the same vein.

  1. Nathu Singh:

Bought by Gujarat Lions for 50 lakhs, base price 30 lakhs

Nathu Singh, son of a labourer, bagged the riches in the IPL-2016 auction when he was bought by Mumbai Indians for 3.2 crores, but a shoulder injury prevented him from taking part in the tournament. Inconsistent performances and a year later, he was grabbed by the Gujarat Lions, giving him a shot at redemption. Nathu is a genuine speedster, hitting 145+ consistently. He would be itching to go for the kill this time and would be a dangerous proposition for the opponent batsmen if he hits top form. At 21, he still has a lot of time to mature as a player and he’s already being hailed as one for the future. This would be a good opportunity for him to excel on the big stage.

  1. Mohammad Siraj:

Bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 2.6 crores, base price 20 lakhs

Siraj hit the jackpot when his local team Sunrisers Hyderabad purchased him for a whopping 2.6 crore. Siraj is known for his pace and was in prolific form this season, finishing as the third highest wicket-taker in the Ranji trophy with 41 wickets. He further impressed in the Zonal T20s, with 9 wickets from just 5 games. The prospect of watching Siraj bowl in tandem with Mustafizur Rahman is exciting. He has been practicing hard for this IPL and will be in the limelight since day 1.

  1. Rishabh Pant:

Playing for the Delhi Daredevils since 2016

Rishabh Pant is the most talked about a young player today, being just 19 and having already debuted for India. Aggression runs in his veins. Pant might turn out to be the best hard-hotter in IPL 10 and he is a handy wicket-keeper too. He’s already hit in the past few months the fastest first-class century by an Indian and the fastest First Class triple ton by an Indian. He also captained the Delhi side in the domestic one-day tournament. Pant will look to cement his place in the 11 and pave the way for his selection into the Indian team for the longer formats eventually, with the Champions Trophy fast approaching.

Apart from these mentioned players, youngsters who are already performing at the international stage like Kagiso Rabada, Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav will also light up this IPL season.
