In this week’s flashback Friday, let’s take a look at one of the best heavyweight fights happened in the recent years. Junior Dos Santos, the former UFC heavyweight champion, faced off with Stipe Miocic in December 2014. Dos Santos vs Miocic 1 was scheduled as a nontitle Fight in a fight night event. Like most heavyweights, both men had massive knockout power with a potential to end a fight at any point of time.
Apart from their massive knockout power, both fighters also had an impressive ground game. Both these fighters entered the octagon with a matching skillset. This bout had every potential to be a brutal slugfest, and that is exactly what it became.
The fight started with both fighters exchanging strikes. Miocic started out really strong, and he had a slight upper hand in the first round with many significant strikes and one successful takedown. For the most part, Junior defended Stipe’s takedown attempts exceptionally.
The entire bout was more like an MMA boxing match without any significant takedowns or kicks. This is a bit surprising as both Junior and Stipe can throw some powerful kicks in their fights. Stipe matched Junior toe to toe in the entire fight, but it seemed to me that Junior delivered more volume with his superior boxing game.
The final round of the fight was pretty close. Junior dominated in the initial few minutes, but Stipe came back solid with some nasty punches. Junior got a cut above his nose in the second round and went on to battle for the remaining rounds with a bloodied face. By the end of the fight, both fighters were bloodied as they sustained some nasty shots throughout the bout.
Dos Santos vs Miocic 1 is easily one of the best heavyweight fights. The relentless warrior spirit showcased by both these fighters gave a fight that satisfied every MMA fan. Despite losing the fight, Stipe proved that he is a championship caliber fighter.
After losing this bout, Stipe Miocic went to knockout some big players (Mark Hunt and Andrei Arlovski) in the heavyweight division. He earned his title shot and became the champion May 2016. Since then, he has defended his title once against Alistair Overeem.
Junior and Stipe will face off once more time for the UFC heavyweight championship. With a victory in their previous meeting, Junior will enter the octagon with great confidence. Champion Stipe Miocic will look forward to avenge one of the two losses he sustained in his entire career. We have two more weeks to go before we find out who prevails as the champion.
