Kinesiology Taping for Golfers

I previously wrote an article called, How Kinesiology Taping is Helping Golfers but never really had a chance to try it. I’ll walk you through step-by-step and how it turned out.

What is Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology tape is an improved version of elastic sports tape that acts to dynamically assist your muscle function. Aims of Taping Tape may be used to: Stabilize or support an injury Relieve pain by de-loading vulnerable or painful structures Facilitate normal movement, muscle action, or postural patterns.

I’ve played a fair amount of golf the year and besides a few aches and pains, I began feel pain on the top side of my right forearm (I’m a lefty so my lead arm). I Didn’t pay much attention to it until a few days later and I could barely pick up a cup of coffee it was that painful.

Golfers/Tennis Elbow

Still I did not have much of a clue until I started to Google a few things (like Kinesiology Taping for golfers) and found out it seemed to be a form of golfers (or tennis) elbow. Somehow I always assumed that condition had something to do with your elbow. I mean it does but not necessarily in a direct way.

More specifically it’s called “Radial Tunnel Syndrome” These symptoms include fatigue or a dull, aching pain at the top of the forearm. Yup, that was it too a tee!

Radial nerve pinching most commonly occurs in folks who participate in sports (like golf!) and occupational activities with repetitive motions such as pushing or pulling, twisting, gripping with the hand or bending the wrist. It can however be caused by direct trauma, a fracture or other means.

Like I mentioned, it was super painful to me and when it’s the first time you experience it you have no frame of reference. Your only clue is the pain and it’s origin.

How Does Kinesiology Taping for Golfers Work?

Essentially once the Tape is applied and stretched properly it lifts the skin, accelerating blood flow to increase the amount of oxygen available to the muscles, which reduces fatigue (and nerve compression) away from the soft tissue underneath the lifted skin. This lifting capability is what promotes blood flow and lymph drainage and allows healing.

I only tried the MuscleAid tape as was suggested in the video below. I taped exactly the pattern shown in the video. If you have other body areas that you are considering taping you would probably need to look up a video or article for that particular technique, for example, “kinesiology taping for shin splints” I think you get the idea….

After I watched the video and followed the proper location on my lower arm it was complete. I really liked the MuscleAid Tape (in all fairness I only tried this one brand). It had the right amount of stretch, good stickiness and comes in a variety of colors.

I wore the tape in the shower. It dried fairly quickly and was not a big deal at all. I also slept with it on and no issues there. It’s advised to wear the tape 3-4 days. Keep in mind, I was also playing golf during this time the tape was on.

I removed it 4 days later and it was still a bit sore that day so I was surprised. However, the very next day, it felt so much better and 80% of that searing pain was gone

Needless to say, I’m now a fan of taping. For around 12 dollars for the tape and a couple minutes of your time, I would totally give it a try.
