Arsenal still have eight players they must sell before transfer window shuts

Arsenal have had a fairly eventful summer transfer window so far, but there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Edu and Mikel Arteta have brought in Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and of course, Gabriel Jesus so far. We still need two or three more top-quality players to really be able to compete, but we can’t afford to have too big a squad either.

Arsenal have to manage the squad wisely, and that means we’ll have to move on a number of players. Here’s a list of eight such Gunners who should be sold before the window shuts.

Nicolas Pepe:

It has been three years since we signed the Ivorian for a club-record £72 million (BBC), but Pepe, sadly, has just not quite been able to make himself a star at Arsenal.

He has entered the final two years of his contract, and a move to a different league, where he’ll play regularly, would be the best thing for all parties this summer.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles:

The Englishman has always been viewed as a player with massive potential, but things just haven’t worked out for him. Maitland-Niles isn’t getting ahead of any of our midfielders, while there’s no role for him as a full-back either.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, which means if we don’t sell him now, we’ll either lose him for nothing or end up in another Eddie Nketiah-like situation next year.

Runar Alex Runarsson:

This signing just made no sense a couple of years ago, and it still makes no sense to us. Arsenal needed to replace Emi Martinez, and instead of going for someone accomplished, we took a huge gamble on Runarsson.

Sadly, that gamble didn’t pay off, and it’s time to cut our losses and let him go.

Bernd Leno:

Unlike Runarsson, it will be fairly easy to sell Leno. The German is a fantastic goalkeeper, and although Arsenal will struggle to get what we want for him, there will surely be offers on the table.

Leno has been a fantastic servant for us, and wherever he goes, he will most likely be a huge hit.

Lucas Torreira:

The Uruguayan came in from Sampdoria in 2018 and had arguably one of the best debut seasons by a midfielder we’ve had for a long time. Torreira was absolutely incredible that campaign, but his stock has dropped massively since.

He has entered the final year of his contract now and it is very likely he’ll be moved on soon.

Pablo Mari:

Although it wasn’t a huge signing at the time, we were really impressed with Pablo Mari. The Spaniard wasn’t fast by any means, but he was good on the ball, positionally disciplined and great in the air.

Mari is a good defender, but he just won’t get ahead of Gabriel Magalhaes now, and it’s best for all parties that he moves on in the coming weeks.

Reiss Nelson:

Like Maitland-Niles, Nelson was always viewed as a huge prospect at Arsenal. However, it’s just very difficult to see where he’d fit in at Arsenal now, especially if we go out and sign another wide player.

That and the fact that he has entered the final year of his contract means Arsenal have to cash in on him now.

Hector Bellerin:

It has been over a decade since Arsenal signed Hector Bellerin, and it has been quite a ride. Sadly, his wonderful story in North London looks like it’s about to come to an end.

Bellerin spent the whole of last season on loan at Real Betis, where he won the Copa del Rey. It’s clear that he wants to go back there, and it’s up to Arsenal now to negotiate a deal that would be the best for all parties.
