Arsenal's potential 22/23 starting XI: Gnabry replaces Martinelli, £27m talent starts in defence

Arsenal are set a huge transfer window this summer, and according to reports, the Gunners now want to sign former academy star Serge Gnabry.

The German international is likely to leave Bayern Munich in the coming months, with Gnabry reportedly unhappy with how much he is valued at the club, and if reports are to be believed, Arsenal are in the race for the winger.

Whilst the Gunners are stocked in the wide-attacker position, there’s no denying that signing a world-class player and former Hale End star in Gnabry is a tantalising prospect. Moreover, Arsenal are reportedly looking at signing another forward who can operate on the wing.

So, with all of this in mind, what could Arsenal’s XI potentially look like next season should Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar somehow pull off the impossible and sign Gnabry from Bayern this summer.

William Saliba joins Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence

One player many Arsenal fans will be expecting to return this summer is William Saliba, who enjoyed a breakout season out on loan with Olympique Marseille, with the defender winning the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award and becoming a member of the France senior squad.

Whilst Ben White has been incredible in his debut year for the Gunners, it’s hard to not ignore just how good Saliba has been, and if Arsenal are to keep the 21-year-old defender, starting him from the off is the best way to do so, with the England international missing out in the process.

Making up the rest of the defence is the reliable quartet of Aaron Ramsdale in goal, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney as fullbacks, and Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence with Saliba, though in reality, it is likely that White could also partner the Frenchman.

Youri Tielemans partners Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard

Central midfield will be one position that will be strengthened this summer, and if reports are to be believed, Leicester City star Youri Tielemans is the current favourite for Arsenal to sign in the transfer window.

The Belgian international could be available for as little as £25m, and at 25-years-old, Tielemans is only getting better with every season, with the midfielder no doubt suited to what Arteta wants from a player of his calibre.

Making up the rest of the midfield is Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey, with the pair two of Arsenal’s best players last season. And with any luck, the Ghanian international, in particular, can this time stay fit for the entire campaign.

Serge Gnabry and Gabriel Jesus lead the line with Bukayo Saka

With Gnabry included in our potential XI, Arsenal’s attack gets very interesting. As mentioned, the wings are arguably the Gunners’ most stacked position with the most quality, with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith Rowe and even Nicolas Pepe all outstanding options to have.

You could even argue that for this reason alone the Bayern star doesn’t make too much sense of a signing, especially when centre-forward is the position Arsenal have to improve the most in the summer. But this is Gnabry we’re talking about, and if the winger is available, bringing him home is just too tempting a prospect.

So, Gnabry is back at the Carpet, along with Gabriel Jesus as the Manchester City remains Arsenal’s main striking target. Who joins the new signings in the attack? It can only be Bukayo Saka.

It seems easy to forget, but Saka actually came through as a left-sided attacker during his Hale End years, with the England international also playing as a left-back in Arteta’s first few months as manager of the club.

Whilst it might seem unfair to drop Martinelli from the XI, the Brazilian will still feature heavily for the Gunners given Arsenal’s UEFA Europa League status next season and the injuries that will pop up throughout the campaign.
